ALOR SETAR, July 24 (Bernama) -- Four friends, including a Thai drug kingpin, were sentenced to death by the Alor Setar High Court here today after they were found guilty of having trafficked cannabis, five years ago.

"I am satisfied that the prosecution has proven its case beyond all reasonable doubt," Judicial Commissioner Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab said when delivering his verdict.

Mohd Sabri Ishak, 36, Muhamad Hasbi Baskaran Abdullah, 41, Jarry Saeddanee, 37, a Thai national, and Azizan Hamid, 45, were detained by undercover police officers disguised as drug buyers at Bukit Kayu Hitam on May 20 2006.

The men were charged with joint intention of trafficking cannabis weighing 93,070 grammes at Jalan Taman Seri Temin, Bukit Kayu Hitam, about 7 am the same day.

100 kilos holy shit. Damn Asians kill everyone for everything to relieve the overpopulation. I swear that once I heard something like people that steal something small from a store sometimes get a death sentence or get mutilated (dick chopped off, slashed with a machete, etc)... Is it just fun for them to kill people?

^but it doesn't make them right. I think any law criminalizing cannabis is wrong. They're putting people to death for the possession of something that can't kill. I just don't get it.

There is a real problem when you can be put to death for harvesting something that grows from the ground naturally. Maybe if they had a giant speed lab that was selling kilos of crank a month, but for some cannabis its cruel and unusual punishment

So execution for producing what is in the USA an approved pharmaceutical product (desoxyn) is civil and alright?

IMO it would be equally as wrong.

I wouldn't care if they where selling meth to school children the point is state sanctioned murder (unless it's political which is different) is just wrong and it's even more wrong when it's over abit of fucking weed. It also shows that no matter what the penality people will still take and sell drugs. Also i would say that it raises the level of violence a person is willing to go to in order to protect themselves. A few weeks in jail no biggie. Getting hung fuckit i am taking as many of them with me as i can.

the ways that most of the world view weed is just ridiculous

I think honestly, the USA is largely to blame for pushing the drug in the same category with drugs like heroin, etc, and also for convening the International Opium Convention in the first place.

Bingo.

"In complying with its foundation signatory status Thailand introduced its first anti-drug laws in 1922, the Narcotics Act B.E. 2465, which laid the foundation for present day drug laws in the Kingdom.

As a foundation signatory, Thailand was also obligated to adhere to a USA-sponsored 1928 amendment to the original Convention. This amendment required signatories to ban the exportation of Indian hemp to countries that had prohibited its use.13

In 1937 Thailand's second prime minister, General Phot Phahonyothin, criminalized cannabis in Thailand by passing the country's first law specifically targeting cannabis, the Marijuana Act B.E. 2477 (1937)."

Its a shame that Western governments don't do more to get rid of the death penalty for marijuana, especially for the countries that only made it illegal in the first place because the Western governments wanted them to. The Leaugue of Nations started that kind of thing with opium regulation, so its not all the fault of the USA. You have to wonder if drug laws today would be completely different if opium wasn't such a huge problem way back when.

Very sad news, my thoughts go out to them as well as their friends and families. What a ridiculous and unnecessary punishment.

Agreed - no matter what, I don't approve of capital punishment, and its even more terrible as a punishment for drug trafficking, regardless of the drug. You're sentencing someone to death for a non-violent crime. But the fact that it's pot makes it all the more absurd - you'd just as well round up everyone who works at the neighborhood bar and sending them to the gallows.

And yes, when punishments are this extreme, it just pushes the people involved in drug dealing to equal extremes. If you know that you're already facing the death penalty for dealing, then what are a couple of murders and assaults going to matter? The sentence you face can't possibly be any worse.

Anyway, my thoughts go out to these guys. God, being murdered by the state for trafficking pot - that's unbelievable.
