Four Corners: Australian country towns in ice epidemic

CHILDREN as young as 11 are injecting ice to escape the boredom of country life and the problem is ravaging Australian towns.

Four Corners reporter Caro Meldrum-Hanna went to take a closer look at the issue visiting regional Tasmania including Devonport, Burnie and surrounding towns and regional Victoria where they visited Ballarat, Castlemaine and St Arnaud. What she found was shocking.

At only 15, Jake* was an ice dealer, a user and a crystal meth cook.

‘Jake’ is the new face of crystal meth, or ice, in Australia. It’s the drug that’s ravaged our major cities. But now it’s destroying country towns one by one.

GROWING PROBLEM: Drugs like ice have Australia hooked

SHOCKING: Video shows the disturbing actions of ice addicts while high on the drug

Meldrum-Hanna travelled through the regions of two states, riding with police and users, to tell the shocking story of towns and people in the grip of ice.

She pieced together a disturbing picture of major international drug cartels working with locally based outlaw motorcycle gangs to push ice out of the cities.

It’s a massive illicit corporate enterprise — sophisticated and highly organised.

Their targets are captive markets of bored teenagers in country towns, where there’s a desperate lack of treatment facilities and under resourced or non-existent police.

Four Corners went to one community of fewer than 4000 people where up to one in 10 are using ice.

Meldrum-Hanna met with teenagers who began using in their early teens, she sat with them as they smoked ice and with others as they injected, and discovered how bikie gangs used other children to “cook” methamphetamine, destroying their health and leaving them with ruinous addiction.

The program tells the story of a generation that is being condemned to a life of drug abuse, crime and ultimately early death.

What will shock viewers the most is how young ice users have become.

One clinical nurse at the coalface in regional Australia said: “The demographic for ice is changing all the time. We’re noticing the age actually dropping, there’s been reports of 10-year-olds presenting at the Emergency Department here.”

Seventeen-year-old Ethan* is a prime example of the power and spread of ice and the reality of what’s happening beyond city borders.

He was injected by a local drug dealer when he was just a boy. He says it took just one night for him to get hooked.

This sent his life into a downward spiral that caused him to leave school, join a crystal meth pack of fellow young addicts hopping from town to town chasing ice, stealing from people night and day to feed their addiction.

Not even his family was safe.

“Mum locked the door on me and I remember thinking ... if I get in there I will hurt her for money. I will get money out of her some, one way or another,” he said.

As each person’s story is told it becomes clear that there is almost nowhere for young addicts in regional Australia to get help. That leaves health workers in despair.

ICE RUSH, reported by Caro Meldrum-Hanna and presented by Kerry O’Brien, goes airs tonight at 8.30pm on ABC. It can also be seen on ABC iview or the Four Corners site.

This is very awful news, very unfortunate. Thank you for sharing… I used ice in my 20's.. and if I didn't move out of San Diego, I might not have survived. I hope they can find some help… <3

No worries, it was pretty horrible and sad to watch how addicted some of these people are to ice, it's really bad that there is such a lack of rehabs and detox clinics for people to goto get off the shit in rural areas.

Here's a link to watch it, I'm not sure if this will work for people out of Australia tho (but if I find a youtube link I will add it) -

That kid claiming to have been cooking for a bikie gang since he was 13 was sooooo full of shit

Whatever the case he seems to have a death wish.

That older lady who was shaking was hard to watch, 3 generations of the family using ice. Damn.

Yeah I've been shaking to much to have a shot before - not a good place to be.

I really did not enjoy this documentary, it so obviously went out of its way to show the worst side of meth abuse that it felt like propaganda to me. Don't get me wrong, I live in a semi rural area on the outskirts of suburban Melbourne and I have seen first hand the damage that ice is doing to the community, but this documentary clearly had little interest in talking to anybody who didn't either identify as a hardcore addict or at least suffer medical and/or legal consequences as a result of their methamphetamine use.

The claim that methamphetamine is being laced with heroin to induce a physical dependence as well as a mental one is an absolute crock of shit, I don't know if they were being purposely misleading or if they just never bothered to verify a ridiculous lie that somebody fed them, either way that is fucking terrible journalism. It was also ridiculous when they referred to 'meth' as a less pure form of 'ice'.

I also highly doubt the claims of the supposed former teen cook, while it isn't inconceivable that a few teenagers hooked on drugs may have been used to manufacture a small quantity of drugs from time to time, I find it incredibly hard to believe that organised crime gangs like Bikies would be recruiting drug addled teenagers to cook up decent sized batches of ice for them, that seems like a lot more risk than it is worth. Not to mention, in my experience, Bikie gang members do not make a habit of hanging around with teenage drug abusers or selling drugs to them directly, it is a pretty quick and stupid way to draw attention to yourself.

meth makes you smell like shit, look like shit, and makes you crazy. what a shit drug.

It also makes you feel amazing, makes sex godly and allows you to work or party non-stop for days. I mean yeah it's a fucked up drug, but people don't smoke it because they like the taste (although it doesn't taste as bad as you'd think, compared to a lot of less harmful drugs).

iono personally I'd muuuuch rather taste the bitterness of PPT or the graininess of ground kratom in cold water than the flavour of methamp vapour. Yuuuuck :p :\
