I found a pack of 20 codeine phosphate/APAP 30mg/400mg. They come in the foil-like punch out packs (blister packs?). They expired in 1999, is it safe to take? I heard that the codeine may lose potency over time. But, they have been sealed in the blister packs away from light and moisture in my medicine cabinet. It has been in room temperature throughout it's years. Does the loss in codeine potency only apply to pills in a bottle? You'd think that if it was sealed in blister packs it'd be well preserved.

Well I personally wouldn't take them, but I would wait to get professional advice from someone here. And I wouldn't take them just because of the fact that they expired 12 years ago.

It should be fine, considering its been in a sealed container away from humidity and temperature extremes.

If you're set on taking them, I would do an allergy test (take one pill and see if you have any adverse reactions) and if everything's good then take the dosage you want.

AFAIK, there may be a slight loss of potency, if anything. Also, make sure you're mindful of the total APAP content you're consuming if you take a lot of them.

Ok, so I took 9 of them which equals out to be 3600mg APAP (don't worry, I've taken this much at one time before and it was fine) and 270mg codeine. I am currently prescribed tramadol for my fibromyalgia so I have a slight tolerance (tramadol is an analog of codeine). I looked at myself in the mirror and I look flushed (red skin).

Flushing is a common reaction to codeine, and that's quite a bit of APAP, close to the 4000mg warning level.

You should be okay unless you're taking those high amounts of APAP on a daily basis. I'm assuming you're experienced with codeine as well, 270mg is a respectable amount for somebody with little opiate tolerance/experience..

There should be no real issue with the codeine expiring and becoming inherently 'bad' in any way, but we can't say for sure.

The flushing of the skin is probably a histamine release reaction to the codeine and could likely be helped with some diphenhydramine.

Just because you took lots of APAP before and didn't experience any negative side effects doesn't mean you should do it again. It only has to go bad once for you to wreck your liver and it will contribute to long term damage regardless. Check out the "OD Directory" for the CWE megathread.

I think this is about all there is to this thread so I'm going to close it.

PM me if there are any further questions.
