Well, the sad thing is that it's more common than people might imagine.

A few months ago a GP in Scotland was caught smurfing 18 pharmacies around their home to fill illegal hand-written prescriptions for oxycodone.

Even Harold Shipman was suspended for illegally obtaining ampoules of pethidine (Demerol) decades before he used morphine and diamorphine to kill his patients. It seems that mostly if a clinician is caught, they get offered treatment. I know of several cases in which doctors managed to be functional addicts for many years. Decades in some cases.
