An online conspiracy theory suggesting that psychiatric medications are the main cause of many mass-shootings dominated an opinion column on Forbes magazine’s website Monday, only to disappear hours later.

Larry Hunter, chairman of former Texas Rep. Ron Paul’s Revolution PAC, wrote the essay. He told The Daily Caller on Wednesday that the financial news outlet removed his column from its website because readers complained that he cited sources affiliated with the Church of Scientology.

Forbes published the column at 8:00 a.m. Monday under the headline “Psychiatric Drugs, Not A Lack Of Gun Control, Are The Common Denominator In Murderous Violence.” Shortly after 1:00 p.m., Twitter users began noting its sudden absence.

Hunter claimed in his column that ”in virtually every mass school shooting during the past 15 years, the shooter has been on or in withdrawal from psychiatric drugs. … the kinds of guns used by mass shooters are far less relevant than the kinds of drugs they were prescribed.

He provided a link to “a partial list of 24 such horrific events that occurred since 1998, not including the Virginia Tech shootings and the recent Sandy Hook shootings where the authorities continue to suppress information about whether and to what extent the shooters were on or in withdrawal from a psychiatric drug.”

“According to the Citizens Commission On Human Rights International (CCHR),” Hunter continued, “between 2004 and 2011, there were 12,755 reports to the U.S. FDA’s MedWatch system of psychiatric drugs causing violent side effects including: 1,231 cases of homicidal ideation/homicide, 2,795 cases of mania and 7,250 cases of aggression.”

Hunter told TheDC that the story “was taken down after a reader made [a] wise crack about [the] CCHR cite.”

That complaint focused on the fact that CCHR is an affiliate of the Church of Scientology, a cult-like religion known for excoriating the practice of psychiatry as counterproductive and harmful to human health.

Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard co-founded the organization in 1969, shortly after he first declared publicly that the field of psychiatry should be eradicated entirely. In addition to school shootings, CCHR has blamed psychiatric medications and other treatments for the Holocaust, the 9/11 terror attacks and Japan’s 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

CCHR also operates a Hollywood, Calif. museum named ”Psychiatry: An Industry of Death.” Among the museum’s exhibits is a display claiming Adolf Hitler’s master plan included the use of psychiatry as a tool for mind-control.

even if it is true, it could just as easily be that people who shoot up civilian areas would be more likely to have been in psychiatric care, not the other way around

I'd say it's a lack of psychiatric medications that leads to violence more often than not.

My question is, how many people still would have committed such acts of violence if they had a bottle of xanax on hand?

The link between anti-depressants and mass shootings is pretty clear, I don't see how you could call it a conspiracy theory. And it is surprising how little media attention the connection gets, though I don't think it's likely that there's any highly-coordinated cover-up going on.

I'm pretty sure a bunch of unmedicated manic depressives are not going to be any preferable to those treated pharmacologically.

The US is a culture fo fear, hate, lies, and ignorance, and has a population of over 300 million. It seems it would follow naturally that every once in a while, one out of the 300 million plus would flip his or her shit and go postal, once in a while.

(P.s. this whole blame-the-anti-depressants thing happened with columbine too.)

Eh... Cap heroin... I am completely off your band wagon... You sir are daft. Sorry... you are so ignorant to what you have right in front of you... Very sad.

Bluelight for the most part over the last few years has been depressing to me. Do you know what a kid loses out on when they are given these drugs. They are taught to not deal with their emotions, fears, anxieties and depression, they are taught to put a bandaid over every aspect of their life. This, being something that I have seen happen, breeds cold, heartless people who feel absolutely content with being put on the road that their government wants them to be on.

Very disheartened by this forum as of late.

You have no clue what you're talking about. I lived well past my teenage years without touching alcohol, recreational drugs or psychiatric meds. I went to therapy for a long ass time with several different therapist and my anxiety never went away without drugs. I really tried, hours and hours of exposure therapy a day for nothing. Some people need these drugs and it's horseshit when they can't access them. Since when does the government set people on the road of taking xanax. From my experience, they do everything in their power to make them hard to get while they can get guns easy as can be.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Anti-depressants aren't a magic bullet for depression/anxiety and aren't billed as such. They are meant as a way to help minimize the negative symptoms so with various forms of therapy, one can manage their depression. Doctors who prescribe them will even insist the patient speak with counselors, psychiatrists or psychologist to get at the root of their problems. There is no cure for depression or anxiety. For you to say it's sad that people take them is what is TRULY sad. You've never been in their shoes and will never know how hard they try to just "think" themselves out of depression, so back off.

Speaking of Scientology: every time I try to find a torrent for The Master, I get a lot of stuff with the word "master" but can't find the actual movie. This has never happened before.

I'd be much more worried if they weren't on psychiatric medication,At least this proves that they're getting some kind of attention and attempted treatment, even if it isn't successful.

I think this whole fuss about psychiatric medication is just a misdirection from the real issue. While I agree that meds shouldn't be handed out like candy and should be used in unison with therapy and lifestyle changes, claiming that they're actually causing school shootings is insane.
