Are there any substances that are known to be able to give false positive to Marquis reagent? that is, that would give the purple - black reaction when it was not actually an MDxx substance? Or does Marquis only react that way to MDxx?

yes.
"black" is about the worst possible 'color' for a positive test. DXM will turn black, although more slowly than MDMA. there are probably many other chemicals that turn black.
except for DXM, none of them are commonly encountered. a small amount of MDMA in addition to something else would probably also result in a false positive. if MDMA turned a real color, like red, it would be easy to tell if there were other ingredients, but unfortunately the black color masks any other colors present.
that being said, i don't think manufacturers are likely to consider fooling test kits a priority when they choose their mixtures.

er on that last point we do know that certain people are rolling bogus pills in MDMA powder to give a false positive, and that very recent case of PMA/MDMA mixed pills seems to indicate a wilingness to include just enough MDxx to fool a test (3mg-15mg), but not enough to be felt.

so if a pill contains some mdma but is mostly pma, can we tell anything from the test?? like will it change color slower or something since it is mostly pma? how about the good ol' bitterness test? will it not taste as bitter?
just lookin for a leg up, cause otherwise the test is worthless (if you're afraid pma is being passed off to you).

right, PMA causes no color change, so MDMA+PMA will give the same results as just MDMA.
the pills with "decoy" MDMA in them do not contain enough MDMA to do anything. if you get a pill that tests positive for MDMA but doesn't feel like MDMA, it might be one of these. so do only one, then wait, and if it feels like MDMA, you're probably ok. one tab of PMA may be dangerous, but it's definitely far more dangerous if you do more; remember, you have no tolerance to PMA regardless of how well you tolerate MDMA.

Ok.. toss DXM because that's actually a rather different reaction if you watch closely enough. I meant the question in the context of complete absence of actual MDxx. The poster who said "yes but you're not likely to encounter them" is the kind of answer I was looking for..
