Fly Amanita look a likes?

It's almost that time of year when Fly Amanita mushrooms start popping in various locations in SoCal.

The harm reduction question (as in not getting yourself killed) I am posing here is -- are there Fly Amanita look-a-like mushrooms out there? Mushrooms that are red/reddish with white spots that aren't really Amanitas or are Amanita variants that kill you sooner than they'd give you a recreational experience?

Also, once dried is there a source for dosing suggestions?

I'm going to post a picture of the Amanita, but please note this is not necessarily the Amanita I see popping-up once the rains start - I'll post some of those photos when the red-heads in question start popping-up.

This photo is just for effect and according to Wiki are actual Amanita muscaria- pixies not included.

fly agaric is very unmistakable. red cap with white spots, white veil, white gills and spores, concentric rings/volva on base

the deadly amanita (destroying angel) has a white or yellowish-white cap. spots on the cap seem to wash away pretty easy

that having been said, i would suggest against consumption of fly agaric. large fruitbodies will have fly larvae munching on them already, and the smell is unpleasant to say the least. effects are varied and can be unpleasant, but if you plan on dream-sleeping for several hours while alternating between cold and hot sweats... be my guest. be sure to dose with a friend who doesn't mind drinkin your pee :)

YES! The death cap.
Although it dosen't look anything like A. Muscaria, it is indeed a member of the amanita genus(Amanita Phalloides) and is respnsible for many deaths every years. I'm not really worried you'll mistake it for muscaria, as it's not red at all and has no spots, but it's still something to keep in mind. Picking mushrooms by one's self can be very dangerous, always be sure to keep a sample of whatever you pick so as to show a trained mycologist later if necessary.

To be completely honest though, I would recommend a muscimol/muscarine/ibotenic acid extract (I forget which one is responsible for it's main effects) unless you're already familiar with the mushroom experience. All that fungal matter churning in your stomach wont feel very pleasant.

be very careful with amanitas man, most of them are deadly.. most of them dont look like fly agarics neither so as long as you've seen them before you'll do fine.. actually i cant and shouldnt speak for california, i only know the mushrooms in britain but as far as i can remember none of the poisonous amanita species look like pantherinas or fly agarics, these 2 have a very particular look about them
 
There are some members of the Amanita family of mushrooms that look kinda sorta like Muscaria that area deadly. Be careful with Amanitas. Even the correct one can kill you if you take too much.

Not really true... A. phalloides, A. verna, A. virosa et. al. look (to me at least) nothing like muscaria. Of course 'look alike' is entirely subjective but there are no deadly poisonous mushrooms with such a bright red cap and white spots.
It's a pretty easy mushroom to ID, I've never heard of any case where a amatoxin containing mushroom has been mistaken for it, nor could I really see such a case would ever occurring, provided the person searching had as much as seen a picture of muscaria.
 
Thats why I said "kinda sorta". I can tell the difference. However, some people who dont know what to look for might think they were a discolored Muscaria, but only if they dont know what to look for.

With a little bit of practice its easy to identify most mushrooms. I have heard of people dying from eating the wrong Amanita though.



Look up Amanita flavoconia:, Amanita frostiana, Amanita subflavoconia:, and panther caps.

When I was 14 I foolishly ate one of those and lived to tell about it. It wasnt any fun. It was one of the dumbest things I have ever done.
