Bullshit, really, as they both are if used daily, however one of them does not necessarily need to be used daily to be affective. Needless to say, I eventually won the debate, I'm on Clonazepam, and doing pretty well.
Unfortunately, most people simply allow themselves to be bullied into whatever treatment their doctor prescribes.
The doctor-patient relationship has changed a lot in the last few thousand years. Used to be that the patient had greater say in what their treatment would be. Now that it's writ in stone, you get option A or option B, neither of which are as effective as option C which is deemed off-limits because we simpletons can't be expected to control our animal urges.
Honestly, I think a life-affirming trip on LSD goes a lot farther towards my general happiness than an anti-depressant which just levels me out. Psychedelics feel like a much more authentic way of reaching a stable/sensible/happy place. If only everyone could experience this w/o the fear of a "bad trip". But, this is just one man's opinion.
To the OP: Based on what you've said, I think you are much better off with yoga/meditation/supplements. I am sorry that modern medicine has unintentionally inflicted so much pain, but don't let it get you down because...well...they're trying! Doctors have good intentions, but they are subject to the same mis-information and twisted logic as the rest of the general law-fearing populus.
