Hello all. I've been reading about the interactions between SSRI's and psychedelics for the past hour now, and still do not have a solid grasp on what the interaction between these two may be. As almost everyone and their dog knows, SSRIs and psys don't mix, you don't trip.

However, Erowid states here that Fluoxetine has no interaction or lessening of effects on psilocybin, while decreasing effects of LSD.

Also, I read someone stating on the Shroomery that basically the longer you have been taking the SSRIs for, the more of a dampening effect it will have on your trip. Receptor downregulation and such, even if you allow ample time for it to be out of the system. For the record, my friend who plans to trip will only have been off the Prozac for 24-48 hours (yes, there will still be a lot in the system due to long half-life).

Sooo has anyone taken 4-ho-met, another substitution of met, or any other tryptamine (including shrooms/psilocybin/psilocin) while on Fluoxetine? If so, what difference in effects have you noted? None? Lessening of some aspects, none of others? No trip? Any info would be appreciated.

I was planning on giving this friend, who's only experienced alcohol and marijuana (to my knowledge), 33mg, seeing as a poster on the Shroomery said to take 2-5 times the usual amount to trip while on SSRIs. However, after reading that fluoxetine has no effect on psilocybin, I am scared that giving s/he the full 33mg could lead to an overload of the senses and possibly a bad trip if there is no dampening of the effects.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. This will be happening probably in 20 hours (tomorrow).

Someone with more SSRI experience than myself should post here but in my case, neither Paxil nor Celexa impacted 5HT2A agonists such as the hydroxylated tryptamines in any significant way.

SSRIs generally affect drugs that cause serotonin release which is something that most of the tryptamines do not do.

33mg is a very high dose to give to someone with no psychedelic experience with or without taking their medications into account. I can tell you though that it tends to be pretty hard to have a bad trip on 4-HO-MET however physical side effects can become apparent with higher doses.

Thank you so much for the quick response, MagickalKat77!

The information on the serotonin release is very informative and helpful.

As I said, I only thought of 33mg because A. it was all I had left and B. that person (Shroomery) recommended 2-5x the regular dose. However, if as we're hypothesizing, it won't be affected, yes that would be a massive dose. Possible breakthrough. Honestly, I think s/he could handle it, seeing as they're very experienced with meditation and the spiritual realm. However, considering the relationship between us, I am not going to risk such things.

On a side note to those who have done high doses of 4-ho-met, is breakthrough possible? I know another dimension of geometric shapes behind closed eyes is possible. However, that was achieved while also on 2mg etizolam, a college binge-drinking (halloween weekend) amount of alcohol, and only like 15-20mg of 4-ho-met. Smoking cannabis is what caused that state, as I have no tolerance anymore. Can entities be reached that guide and teach such as 4-aco/shrooms/dmt and the like can do?

EDIT: Side question, how much etizolam should be administered if a bad trip that cannot be gotten out of does occur? How much will it affect motor skills if already tripping and thus hyper-aware of one's body? We will be at a state natural park, and walking down 10-40* slopes will be necessary at the end.

I can't answer about etizolam but as far as "breaking through" with 4-HO-MET - I'd say its pretty unlikely. There isn't a strong mental component to 4-HO-MET. It becomes very visual (both OEV and CEV) at high doses and has a great body high but it lacks that psychedelic push that something like shrooms or DMT has.

What would your advice be on facilitating the most introspective trip possible?

As I said, we'll be in a state park where semi-climbing is required, so a boombox/stereo isn't possible for music. A phone and headphones is possible though.

I've always felt laying down with closed eyes after dosing, and meditating through the come-up leads to the most ground-breaking trips. In your opinion, would closed eyes, or open eyes watching a beautiful massive landscape be better for introspection? And would it be better hearing nature and the surroundings, or music when doing so?

This person is in their early 50s by the way.

Sorry for all this, I'm just wired now.
