So wtf. My chest is tight. I'm weezy. I'm coughing up clear mucus, but there always seems to be more. If I shoot dope all day it doesn't bother me. But when I go to bed, I wake up a million times coughing up flem. Now that I stopped using I'm hacking all day long. I was kinda thinking pulmonary edema from the heroin... but I don't know why it would be from that?

Help me out here... any similar experiences? It seems like i'm improving every hour since i quit using.

If it was pulmonary edema you would probably be dead. Or at least dying. You definitely wouldn't be out walking around.

Maybe that will provide a little peace of mind for you...

haha! thanks man!

well any other idea about what it could be? because I have been able to deduce that it is related to the drug use...

I mean just as a wild hypothesis I would say maybe your heroin use was supressing your cough reflex, and you might have had fluid build-up in your lungs that your body was not able to expel via normal, physiological processes. That's just a shot in the dark, though, man. I honestly don't know. I assume you smoke cigs? For how many years/how much do you smoke?

Plus it makes sense that since you quit, you're beginning to cough a lot. That reflex isn't dulled down anymore.

actually I don't smoke lol! just dope. I know its fucked up. I don't drink either, or smoke pot, or do uppers. I just like dope.

I don't know man. I mean your best bet is to go see a doctor just to find out for sure.

i would def go to the ER or your doc and get a chest x-ray. tight chest, hacking cough, and lots of sputum could be a few different things and should be evaluated and treated.
please go see your doc.

edit: just saw you have no insurance...
seriously, you should at least try to see a doc who can listen to your lungs and evaluate what's going on, y'know?

I don't shoot dope but have used opiates steadily for the past 3 years. I use now more than I ever have, naturally as tolerance will go up. Since about last summer I have noticed similar symptoms. I consider myself a healthy individual; don't smoke cigs/pot/drink, but only use opiates (now, I'm not naive-I know this is a poor choice). I exercise regularly and eat 5 times a day. Still, I notice chest congestion, coughing up (clear) mucus, and when I breathe I can hear shit in my chest. This typically occurs in the morning. I too was wondering if this was opiate related. Maybe a result of prolonged use? It's one of the only unhealthy habits in my life. I don't have, nor have I had, a cold/flu that would cause these symptoms.

How many others note these symptoms that use opiates ?

I have taken about 120mg of methadone for years with rare breaks and notice this, particularly on a day I get a refil and can take more before checking out for the night. I will wake up with a little rumbley flem-like cough, but once I hack it up/out its mostly just gone until the next morning.

I too don't smoke, weed or cigarettes, and only take my drugs oral or plugged for the most part so it can't be a drip or smoking-binge effect. I think its just a natural suppression of your own body hacking shit up and instead letting it pool at the bottom while you sleep and the reason it is not there in the day is that you can consciously take a cough if need be, but asleep you can't. On the couple of day these past years not having methadone for a number of days, the off chance I have been able to sleep, and even in waking hours, I have noticed almost a hyper-respiratory response where it feels as if you are breathing too deep, too fast, and exercising a muscle that never get pushed that far, and amongst everything else, it will hurt. :|

Hopefully your case is different, but this just reminded me very much of my situation.

Back in November I was up at an inpatient rehab for shooting dope, and everything was going along fine. Anyway, I noticed my breathing was getting more labored by the day, especailly after walking any distance I would be nearly doubled over, out of breath. Long story short, the nurses sent me to the Emergency Room at the local hospital, and after numerous tests and whatnot, they found out I had 2 litres of fluid in my right lung, it wasnearly collapsed. Also I had half a liter of fluid around my heart, which was putting an incredible pressure on my heart. The oxygen levels in my blood were below 55, when they should be twice that. They were amazed I was still walking around. After some more tests and surgery, they noticed I had swollen lymph nodes. A biopsy landed me a diagnosis of cancer. Hodgkins lymphoma. I'm doing chemotherapy now and should be okay, but It was really fuckin' shocking.

I CERTAINLY hope that your situation is something a little less serious. I'm not tryin' to scare you, it just seriously made me think of my situation, and to try and tell people sometimes little things end up being more serious than you may think. It pays to get stuff checked out. I haven't told many people on here about this. Sorry to hijack the thread, it's early and i'm pretty high and rambling.

These kinds of symptoms can happen if you're a heavy user and your ROA is snorting. This comes from the powder making it into the lungs. It usually happens when blowing big lines for a long time on a constant basis. But if this is happening and you shoot whatever you use then it could be something more serious, or it could be something unrelated to your habit. It could be bronchitis or something, the time you have to get help is when you are not getting much air into the lungs and it is tough to breath, or if you notice any possible blood in the mucus/flem.

And also remember that if you are in the U.S. and you have no insurance you still can go to the emergency room. It is the law that you be treated in energency rooms even without insurance.

After a couple really close calls with death including one consisting of a week long coma and near paralysis, I have learned to be acutely aware of what my body feels like it is trying to tell me. You can get a heads up about certain shit way before it might be noticably a problem later on and it is more difficult to deal with.

Sorry about the cancer diagnosis, I can only hope they give you adequate pain meds to manage the pain being your ex-junky status, and that you get well if you can as soon as you can! <3

Thanks buddy, but due to my "ex junky status", they won't script me shit. The methadone I get from the clinic is the only thing I have to manage my pain. Luckily i'm not in a HUGE amount of pain, but one of the tumors I have is pressing on my spine and can be pretty painful. I could go to pain management, but I have no insurance and not much money as it is. Sucks.

Sorry abotu hijacking this thread, OP.

opiates inhibit cough. they are cough medicine. withdrawal = opposite of opiate effects = lots of coughing

opiates also cause respiratory depression and let some water fill into the lungs. if you feel like that, you're taking too much, and i think (correct if wrong..) could be on the verge of, well, literally drowning

i get the same sensation when i'm pretty high, and i have to keep grunt/coughing during w.d

I guess I have been "drowning" in myself for years as it seems; in more than one way too! :\

i don't actually know if it's dangerous. there is more fluid in the lungs though, the feeling like after going to the pool yeah? anyone know any ways to mitigate any possible danger?

Would taking an OTC expectorant like Guaifenesin or another agent commonly found in those cough and cold remedies help loosen up the flem and keep it from coalescing into a super-blob in your lungs or are all those things mainly just crap that are marketed with a fine touch?

Perhaps keeping some psuedofed or other stimulant with PNS activity on hand could at least keep your airway open.
