Stop resisting!
The hillbilly heroin hoedown in Florida has ended. The number of pain pills sold by Florida doctors dropped 97 percent from 2010 to 2011 according to the DEA. In 2010, 90 of the top 100 Oxy-prescribing doctors in the country were in Florida. In 2011, just 13 made the list, and none cracked the top ten. Turns out the state's crackdown on pill mills has actually worked.

Florida's lax laws once made the state a pill poppin' paradise. Addicts from across the country routinely traveled down to Florida to the state's pill mills -- many of which were located in Broward County -- to easily get their fix. Doctors were doling out the medications with little or no questions asked. Unsurprisingly, the amount of pain pill related deaths in Florida were reaching an alarming point.

But the Florida Legislature put its foot down. Laws that took effect last July largely banned doctors from selling pain pills directly from their own offices. A number of undercover operations and arrests signaled that the state was serious about enforcing the laws. A newly created database also tracks how many prescriptions doctors are writing, and monitors if patients are getting multiple prescriptions from multiple doctors.

I, for one, am glad that this has happened. The situation in Florida was getting pretty re god damn diculous.

They're only focusing on oxycodone. Like oxycodone is the only opioid that people doctor shop for, abuse, get addicted to or overdose on.

I'd like to see the prescribing rates for all opioids and see if others just went up when the oxycodone numbers went down...

I agree with Memphis though, it was getting pretty insane.

thats a very good point NT. while they are watching the scripts for oxycodone fall i wonder how many scripts for opana, dilaudid or any other strong opiate have increased.

^Exactly...another factor that's probably much harder to get numbers for would be the number of people using heroin as their opioid of choice instead of oxycodone...

I remember hearing about how people would hit up 4-5 of those "pain clinics" a day and get high doses of oxy from them and pay cash for them, and how all of the doctors at the clinics would just pretend that their patients had major pain issues, etc. and they didn't at all.

Was it like that?

yes, from what i understand people were going to pain clinics and had no pain issues at all and received large amounts of narcotics. A lot of reports say that some people didn't even have medical records (MRI, X-rays, prior doctors records etc.). They all pay cash (most clinics were cash only no insurance) and are given scripts for mainly oxy, loratab and xanax. also, a large number of the pain clinics had in house pharamcies which kept the scripts under the table for the most part. the absence of a DEA tracking system made it possible. while a shit load of scripts for oxy were written daily the DEA was none the wiser for a long time because the scripts were not tracked thru doctor's DEA numbers.

In Broward County you used to be able to bum OC 80s like cigarettes in certain neighborhoods. I had strangers hand them to me for free on occasion.

They are cutting back on all opiates and not just oxy in FL and it's about god damned time they did. Two close friends of mine have died from that shit in the last couple of years. I don't want anyone to get the idea that I don't like drugs, because I do, really I do. But pain pills are for people that ere in pain and not for recreational use. I have degenerative spinal arthritis, herniated discs and pinched nerves in my back. The first doctor I went to many years ago was a pill pushing quack and I didn't know it until it was too late. I was very naive at the time. I should have known when he wrote me scripts for the unholy trinity without doing any real work up on me. The unholy trinity at the time was oxy, soma and xanax. He put me on enough of that shit to tranqualize an elephant. When I complained to him that he wasn't doing anythink to fix my problems he finally realised that I wasn't someone seeking narcotics and I really had problems. He promptly refered me to a "real" doctor that ran MRI's, X-rays and all that other fun stuff and let me know my back was a fucking mess. I got the surgery and treatment I needed to fix most of my problems or at least make them liveable but by then I was physically addicted to pain killers. I hated having to take them just to be normal and not dope sick. It took me about 4 years to ween myself off of them. Every place I went to that promised they could end my addiction just wanted to put me on more dope, methadone or suboxone and they treated me like I was a low life criminal. What a fucking joke. The governor of Florida, Rick "the asshole" Scott, fought against the pill mill monitoring. His cronies stood to lose too much money. It had to get to the point where 6 people a day were dying just in my county alone and programs were being aired on cable tv all around the country about the problem in FL before anything was done. Now "the asshole" wants to start drug testing wellfare recipients before they can get assistance. They have to pay for the testing out of their own pocket. Guess who owns many of the clinics that will be doing the testing? Well, "the asshole" doesn't, at least not anymore, the clinics have been put in his wifes name so there isn't any conflict of interest?! WTF! Politics in FL is like nazi steam bath. Sorry for the rant, but this shit pisses me the fuck off.

People that die from opiates die chasing a Higher High than the last one...
If your not chasing that first high & using harm reduction techniques than your all good

Some people wish they could have gotten a doctor like your's.............most doctors dont give anything worthwhile out & the patient has legitimate pain. Seems you are pissed off at your doctor because you didnt know how to handle the pain meds he gave you. You were naive in thinking the meds were gonna do their job w/o giving you an addiction.

Dont blame your doctor, blame yourself for not educating yourself about the positives & negatives of opiates. You obviously got carried away with them & git addicted like many but thats the game we play when we are in pain.

Take responsibility for your actions & stop blaming the doctor. You could have flushed the meds down the toilet or have gone to see another doctor on your own.
