TALLAHASSEE — Florida Supreme Court justices held a one-hour, sometimes testy hearing Thursday on a proposed medical marijuana amendment to determine the constitutionality of ballot language.

"Misleading" language is one of the primary complaints from Attorney General Pam Bondi, who has asked the court for an advisory opinion on the amendment proposed by People United for Medical Marijuana. In her brief, Bondi states that the amendment "hides the fact that the Amendment would make Florida one of the most lenient medical-marijuana states, allowing use for limitless 'other conditions' specified by any physician."

Some of the justices grilled People United attorney Jon Mills about the scope of the proposed amendment, which he countered is narrow. Much of the discussion focused on the term "debilitating disease," which is used in the ballot summary, versus "medical conditions," which is used in the amendment language.

The amendment gives "debilitating medical condition" as a requirement for medical marijuana and lists several ailments including cancer, glaucoma, positive status for HIV, AIDS, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis, but also states that it's for "other conditions for which a physician believes that the medical use of marijuana would likely outweigh the potential health risks for a patient."

The most conservative judges on the bench, Chief Justice Ricky Polston and Justice Charles T. Canady, appeared to aggressively challenge Mills while more liberal judges Barbara Pariente and Peggy Quince were inclined to ask questions to help explain the amendment. The seven-member panel has until April 1 to make a decision.

Solicitor General Allen Winsor, who presented the case for Bondi, said people "don't even have to have a disease" to get medical marijuana under this amendment.

Polston likewise said that the way he read the amendment, a student "stressed over exams" could go to a doctor and get a prescription for pot, though Mills said it would have to be a "debilitating" ailment.

Patients who are prescribed medical marijuana would have an identification card and be tracked by the health department.

Twenty states and the District of Columbia now allow medical marijuana.

Even if the court allows the medical marijuana amendment on the 2014 Florida ballot, People United has to obtain 683,149 signatures by Feb. 1. The group has about 500,000 signatures but less than half that number are verified.

Neither Bondi nor House Speaker Will Weatherford and Don Gaetz, who also oppose the bill, were present at the hearing. But the amendment's most outspoken proponent, attorney John Morgan, was. ....

It should be completely legalized and allowed for any reason the person taking it wants.

Why do I need to be dying to feel good?

Also what risks? I think its pretty common knowledge that marijuana and thc are benign.

Fuck those backwater florida rednecks (hey some of my best friends are rednecks lol) they should just go back to tag teeming beat ass old women who look like an old catchers mit. These are the scum bags.

Keep fighting what is just.. you will loose even more of the sliver credibility you have. Its a new age and in a fraction of a second the world knows about your lies. I think one of the biggest promoters of addiction and the use of harmful drugs are all the assclowns who orchestrated and promoted the lies about marijuana.. If you lie to people about anything and they find out you loose your credibility. The way this plays into the situation on drugs is that outlandish lies have been told about marijuana and people isn't dumb. They tried the marijuana and came to the conclusion that what was being claimed about it was utter nonsense. So a natural conclusion, for an intelligent person could be.. So if they are absolutely full of shit on this then why should I believe them when about all these supposedly dangerous drugs? The reason that marijuana is a "gateway' drug is due solely to the propaganda that has been spread about it.. PERIOD.

Fuck Florida and Texas for there backwards outdated Marijuana policies!!!! Just look at the penalties for Cannabis in these states

http://norml.org/laws/item/florida-penalties

http://norml.org/laws/item/texas-penalties-2

^^^Then again I don't believe Texas even exists

Didn't even notice the first time reading that that both of those places suspend your license for any drug charge.

The government supressing its people, completely diminishing your quality of life or possiblity to better your life after a conviction.
Almost as digusting as there outrageous laws in the first place.

Get with the fucking program, Pam.

Get with the fucking program, Pam.

I did some research on this. While I'm not a Florida resident, I'm not THAT far away. Bondi is interested in a political career. From what I read, this is likely just part of her interest to have conservative support in a gubernatorial? race. I'm pretty sure she's aiming for governor though it could be senator. It's unfortunate because Florida has a lot of elderly people that need safe access to affordable medical cannabis.

She just doesn't want a bunch of young people swarming to the polls when she's up for re-election in 2014. If there's no president or trendy issue on the ballot, young people don't vote.

She's into a political career? Millions of people are also into some dank ass kush or whatever those kids say, I don't know I'm on the other side of the world.

Down with Pam?

Up with Afterlyfestyle governer of Australia 2014 & his cone smoking policies they're really good mate trust 5/5 wow what a terrific idea!

What's the odds of some independent hippy senator coming in and winning the vote if they support the legalisation?
