Florida Man Kept Nephew Chained to Bed in Mobile Home Full of Marijuana

It might be a tough situation, but imprisoning, beating or killing someone to save your own skin is not the right thing to do. I can't believe this is a controversial point of view I'm advancing.

I agree that hurting the shit out of someone is wrong in almost every situation, but we're not being given the entire facts here. What if the nephew was adamant about selling marijuana being the wrong thing to do no matter what? If you spring that kind of bullshit on someone running a major operation, I think that you're putting that person in a situation mentally where there are no correct answers. If there weren't as many douches, in other words, there would be a whole lot fewer potential snitches being tied to beds or worse.

You can't take absolute morality and apply it to a situation where you literally are about to be swallowed by a black hole of legal consequences. The physics change at that event horizon.

I'm not taking an absolutist stance. I'm sure that there are situations in which it would be justified to chain your nephew up. This is not one of them; if the kid won't take a bribe, then you need to run away. Even in amoral, pragmatic terms, the guy shot himself in the foot, he's going to face extra charges and be sentenced more harshly. Honestly, how does anyone think that chaining up a family member is going to be the most prudent course of action?

Once again, the grower was confronted with two choices: run away from everything he's worked to build, or keep his nephew on lock down until they came to an understanding. if it wasn't a family member, I believe it would be reasonable to expect to never see that kid ever again. This guy took the middle road and he's going to get punished for trying to defend an operation that should have been legal anyways.

The guy chained someone up to a bed. That's not cool. You say that it should be legal; it's exactly this kind of shit that stops it from being so. He could have run away from a grow-op in a trailer, which is not really the biggest loss in the scheme of things, he could have worked it out in a way that didn't involve locking someone in a room, he could have destroyed the evidence, or he could have put his hands up and taken the rap. What he did was heinous.

You say that this could all be worked out with negotiation, and that chaining someone up is the wrong thing to do. I think we both agree that this is exactly what the grower would face on a more severe scale if he was caught. It's all kinds of wrong, but this is the drug war. They have the country so brainwashed that even drug users think that the guy who had a momentary lapse in moral protocol in an attempt to save himself from years of dodging rape and stabbing is the one who is the bad guy. Well, I'm sure you'll all be proven right as he's really fucked now.

I'm not disagreeing with you Vader, btw. I just think that in his situation, he wouldn't have been thinking very clearly and basically instinct kicked in. Destroying evidence isn't really foolproof, I mean, to be perfect about destroying the evidence would've taken days and if he let the kid go, he could've had less than an hour, not to mention if he didn't do it perfectly, they could build a case with the slightest bit of evidence based on what the kid knows.

I guess my conclusion is while he didn't make the right decision, I don't think there was an easily reached right decision whatsoever in this scenario.
