In one of the stupidest Florida crime stories in recent memory (which is really saying something), three teens broke into a Silver Spring Shores home and found the cremated remains of the owner's father and two pet Great Danes. Thinking they were some sort of drug, the teens decided to snort ashes.

Now, one of the men involved, Jose David Diaz-Marrero, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the crime.

Diaz-Marrero, now 20, and two of his friends, Waldo Soroa, 21, and Matrix Andaluz, 19, broke into the home of Holli Tencza back in late 2010. They stole some jewelry, a laptop, a DVD player and a 42-inch flat-screen television, and, oh yeah, the three urns.

The trio thought the urns contained crushed pills, and decided to snort and taste the contents. They had no idea they were actually ashes until they read local news reports about the urns being stolen.

Diaz-Marrero pleaded guilty to the crime back in June. "I recognize that I've made a big mistake," he said in court according to The Ocala Star-Banner.

He received eight years in prison, and after that he'll receive six years of probation and will be ordered to pay $20,000 in restitution. Andaluz has previously been sentenced to nine years in prison, with 12 years of probation. Soroa's case is still pending.

Authorities were able to recover the ashes of the victim's father and one of the Great Danes and the father in a lake. The ashes of the other dog had been accidentally thrown out by someone who thought they were a bag of concrete.

that is incredibly stupid and weird. The sentence seems harsh but i wouldn't know what to do with that kind of stupidity either.

i could understand if the kids were delusional at the time. I'm surprised that the article didn't immediately jump to, 'kids on bath salts snort cremated human and dog remains' lol.

With all due respect to the deceased's remains - LOL.

Easily one of the most bizarre DitM articles ever.

Keep this up and the feds will make cremated remains a Schedule I narcotic.

Nice way to fuck up your life. I'm sure they will have zero job options when they get out, imagine a future job application and the place looks up their name and this thread and others will probably pop up.

So I imagine the penalty wouldn't have been nearly as harsh if they didn't steal the ashes/urns and admit they snorted/ate some of it thinking they were drugs? What a bunch of morons.

At least they all had some badass names "Diaz-Marrero, now 20, and two of his friends, Waldo Soroa, 21, and Matrix Andaluz, 19"

as stupid as they may be, eight years? Ive seen violent criminals and sex offenders get lighter sentences

Chances are it was a home invasion charge, but still, eight years seems highly draconian

I agree eight years is way too much

These kids should have gone to bluelight and posted a thread .... The title could have read....
Will this get me high? - found ash colored powder in urns

How dumb can you be to know that urns contain ashes of dead bodies, dogs etc

And if you can't determine the difference between ashes and powders then you shouldn't be doing drugs

Yeah that kid on the left looks really baked. Either way, what kind of dumbasses would assume the urns contained crushed pills? Who does that really? It would take thousands of pills. That doesn't make sense. Plus you would notice the tiny bits of bone fragments. I have my dog's ashes and they look nothing like drugs. Stupid fucks.

i am just curious.... as I dont recall ever actually seeing cremated remains up close.... do cremated remains in any way resemble crushed pills or powder cocaine?
obviously ashes are a powder substance.... but if you were to put some doggy or person ashes in a baggy... i mean ??????

As far as I recall, no not at all. We tipped some of one of my relatives ashes into several spots that we were planting trees in their memory, it just reminded me of the ashes that you clean out of a slow combustion stove or fireplace.

Fucking idiots bet that was a nice buzz, also no imo human ashes doesn't look like drugs if my memory is right they look like you went up to a dead fire and scooped up a handful of ashes and threw it in a bag. They clearly look like greyish ashes from something that was once burnt. Seen my great grandma up close after cremation. They obviously don't know what good yay looks/smells like. Also the dude on the left does look like he just got baked imo.
