A Jacksonville dentist charged with 14 drug offenses is in jail on $2.5 million bail.

Duval County jail records show Richard Verrette, who has been in private practice since 1986 and has an office at 456 University Blvd. N., was charged Monday with multiple counts of drug trafficking and possession with intent to sell hydrocodone and oxycodone.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office spokesman Mike McCall told Times-Union news partner First Coast News that Verrette was writing prescriptions to people in exchange for crack cocaine and was caught in an undercover sting.

The Web site for Verrette’s practice lists him as a Boy Scouts of America committee member and a volunteer for Parents for LIFE, a Catholic youth ministry.

A woman who answered the phone at Verrette’s home declined to comment.

Man this guy is pretty stupid, you would think a doctor would earn enough to fund a crack habit without having to trade bloody scripts and be committing 10 times as bad of an offence. He is going to go down bg time and if he was just purchasing for personal use he probably wouldn't of even got caught, even if he did he probably wouldn't be facing jail time.

Why are my dentists all teetotalers? I feel discriminated against.

2.5 milllion $ bail.. What did he kill someone? I agree he should be facing time and all that but shit I think that's a little much..

id let him work on my teeth fuck,if hes down for handing out scripts hed surly give me a few vallume for my sensitive teeth lol

There are people commenting below the original article from jacksonville, a few of them being former patients, and one was saying something like: "...what? mean? He was always SO nice....etc"

lol

The purpose of bail is to allow an accused person to remain free and out of jail before their criminal trial while ensuring that they will actually show up for the trial.

This person is accused of dealing drugs, is suspected of being a crack addict, and is a physician who probably earns good money. He is a flight risk.

For him, posting a $50,000 bail bond (which only requires that you put up 10% of that in cash) is no guarantee that he won't skip out on such a serious crime. Unless he has $250,000 cash lying around, he probably would have to put up his home or something of similar value to get a $2.5M bail bond. It's less likely he'll skip out on that.
