I have to fly next week and am terrified, especially with all the planes crashing. I'm always a nervous flyer, but now especially. I have some 5 mg Valium and also .5 mg Xanax. Which would be better to take, and how soon before takeoff? I'm actually afraid I might have a cardiac event, that's how petrified I am.

Xanax produces more anxiolysis than valium, it would be preferred in this situation.

0.5mg of xanax is also about twice as strong than 5mg valium.

They're both going to work, but xanax is the better option.

Take it whenever, there is no right answer for that. An hour beforehand, or whenever you expect anxiety.

How long is the flight?
Are you going to need something for the duration?
Are you going to need something for the landing?

Just asking a few questions as context can help. eg. I reckon I would need to dose up just being in the Airport and thinking of the long wait before boarding, the anticipation of when I will be returning home, will I need to use the toilet excessively while in the air etc. ( ridiculous examples but hope you get the point ).

So basically what is the main situation/time or event that you think you will need medication to help you get through it?

The flight is 2.5 hours and I will need to be calmed during the entire experience, from getting on to the plane to landing. I always sit on the aisle and usually go to the restroom twice on the flight. I would not be capable of sitting in an inner seat.

Ok, that makes it clearer, thanks.

I would go with the Xanax.
Try put off taking it for as long as possible, but when and if you really need it then 0.5mg should help you get through the complete trip in a more comfortable mind space.

IME returning home is always easier and it might not be necessary to take 0.5mg on the return.

Travel safely and hope you don't stress too much

Xanax for sure. Although I would personally recommend 1 mg lorazepam instead. But, I have a weird reaction to Xanax and find it hyper stimulating to the point of anxiety. Aisle seat is the best!

Does anyone know if sublingual potentiates the Xanax? Or any other way to do so? I think the .5 is not enough for me but I'm afraid to take more. The anxiety of taking a higher dose would be counterproductive but I'm wondering if I can potentiate by taking it with food or not, etc.
