First time taking DXM with Hydrocodone - need dosage advice

Hey guys,

Swim has read a great deal about how taking DXM with opiates can both potentiate and reduce/control tolerance, and he needs some dosage advice from those of you who are more experienced with this to make sure he is being safe. He is currently taking 30mg of hydrocodone (3 norco 10/325s) per dose for a long term back injury, and wants to make his prescriptions last longer and be more effective. Swim tends to have anxiety when it comes to combining drugs, and generally avoids doing so because of that, but since his tolerance keeps rising, he has no choice now. So, his question is this: if he takes 30mg of DXM 1 hr before his usual dose of 30mg of hydrocodone, how much more intense is the effect? Should he reduce the amount of hydrocodone to be on the safe side, or perhaps start with a lower dose of DXM? Thanks...

I've done the combo a couple times and definitely noticed difference but I couldn't say by how much. I only do true opioids once a month but my regular kratom use kind of hard to judge since it can affect tolerance. Since you're a regular hydro user I don't think you'll have to reduce the amount you take on either.
 
^Fair enough. Swim will probably start with a small dose of DXM (15mg) and his usual dose of 30mg hydrocodone to see how that reacts, and then up the DXM to 30mg next time if he doesn't notice a difference. Swim is generally not a big fan of combining pharmaceuticals, especially two drugs that both act as respiratory depressants, but given how many people seem to do this combo, it's probably fairly safe as long as the dosage is kept to a reasonable level. Will post back results after. If anyone else would like to chime in between now and then with their advice/experiences, please do so. Thanks...
 
I think as long as you keep the DXM around the recommended dosage you'll be fine. Always good to start low though since you never know how your body will react.
 
just a gentle reminder op. we don't use "swim" or variants on bluelight but rather type in first person.
 
I took DXM twice with vicodin & I didn't take much DXM since I'm sensitive to most meds........it was 2 small gulps each time with (1) 10mg vicodin & I was zonked out of my mind. It took me 15 minutes to text 3 words back to my gf.......she got pissy & called me, lol!

Never again........I can't handle it because it felt like I was nodding in & out.
 
The first time I did the combo I did 45mg of DXM, 20mg hydrocodone, 10mg oxycodone and some weed. The opioids (and weed) were my usual dose so the only thing that was new was the DXM and like you I was "nodding" off at my computer which is something I don't normally do. A month later I did the same as above but with 20-30mg of DXM I didn't get the nods but it did still feel more intense than without it. This was with instant release DXM, I plan on seeing how Delsym is this weekend.
 
Ok, so I just tried the combo, starting small with just 15mg DXM and my current dose of 30mg hydrocodone, and the results were not what I had hoped for. In my case, all it did was, for lack of better words, make me feel "car sick." Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I suppose - I just wish I was one of those people who responded well to this combo, because I only have 8 pills left now (10/325 each), and now have no choice but to up the dose to 35 mg of hydro. Do you guys think I need to CWE my pills since 35 mg hydro will mean 1137.5 mg of APAP? I know it's only a small amount over the recommended 1000 mg maximum of APAP, but APAP is toxic shit...
 
For me dxm is more of a tolerance stabilizer than potentiator. It won't make a dose stronger for me but it makes my next redose less weak, if that makes sense. I have heard it keeps tolerance lower but I haven't used it long enough to actually know how well it works.
 
How about this, don't do the dxm, do the hydro, drink grapefruit juice to help bioavailability
 
^I already take Tagamet before each dose, though I'm not sure I can tell much of a difference in the duration of effects, to be honest. I know from reading that grapefruit juice works much the same as the Tagamet, by inhibiting the metabolism of the drug, but have never tried it - does it make much of a difference, in your opinion?
