to give some background: i have extensive experience with all sorts of pharms and illicit drugs, from benzodiazepines to opioids, and even some dissociatives, but i have little psychedelic experience limited to marijuana (daily as long as i have it on me) and hawaiian baby woodrose seeds (terrible trip due to emotional issues at the time and horrible setting- also, no visuals).

i'd also like to add that i DO suffer from anxiety and an EEG showed that i have a potentially epileptic temporal lobe (however i've done massive doses of amphetamines, cocaine, and tramadol without any ill effects), but this is all kept at bay with 20 mg of valium divided in two daily doses.

-----------------------------------------

anyway, i've found peyote growing out in my neighboring woods. i read that it's usually 6-12 buttons so as a first time i'll just stick to 6. my question is, what should i expect really, in short summary? i'm a buddhist and am a spiritual person so i'm hoping to reflect during this trip. also, what would be an appropriate setting? does at a friends (he'll be my sitter) sound fine? or is an indoor setting dull? (i love sitting by the creek when i'm stoned)

Appropriate setting: Nature, with friends, preferably lovers or potential lovers. Try to be outside, definitely.

Expect a longish trip, maybe 10 hours. With a slow come-up. Should be in full swing by 2 hours.

Expect some nausea. Don't expect to eat.

Good luck! I hope you have a nice time. It'll probably be great for meditation.

Try to weigh the cactus buttons, dosing based on weight is much more reliable since buttons can vary a lot in weight just like mushrooms or weed tops can. Leave significant parts of the cactus intact if you can so that your harvesting does not exploit these cacti which are gradually becoming extinct.

For me the duration is more than 10 hours, pretty much the entire day and well into the night. During the final hours I tend to get pretty tired and sometimes get a headache, but it is not chaotic, confusing and mentally taxing to me and the really strong part is definitely shorter for me than those 10 hours so I don't think it is necessary to worry about being able to handle hallucinating for 10 hours straight like with some other psychedelics. It is more gentle and forgiving than most in this regard and IMO more empathogenically entheogenic rather than psychedelically entheogenic.

I agree with RS about the setting: at least have the option to go outside for part of the trip and make sure you feel safe, comfy and cozy wherever you go or stay. Outside meaning those woods rather than a 'concrete jungle' / city. I'm a buddhist as well and I find that mescaline (I only had synthetic mescaline that was able to produce full trips, my attempts with cactus powder or cactus concoctions only gave me threshold effects) produces a state of mind that much resembles a mild form of non-abiding awakening. It makes me feel like I am my unbridled and most native or original self. While there can be trippy and distorted effects (one could call these aspects of makyō but in the neutral way, considering that part of the process and interestingly challenging rather than something bad to avoid) I find clarity to be predominant especially at limited doses.

I find mescaline to be beautiful and visionary, full of deep meaning and profundity, intensely emotional with great potential for nostalgia and a wonderful form of melancholy... but not dramatic in a menacing way. The emphasis seems to lie on the pure and true, the self-evident suchness that comes before description and derivation. Revealing the nature, source or element of things.

Meditation is likely to lead to out of body experiences, spiritual visions and things like that and it comes natural, spontaneously and obviously even for those who are not well practiced at it.

Whether you reside inside or outside, keep your setting peaceful and avoid having your company or your activities getting overly complicated. Don't worry too much about what to do for activities or about expectations being met or not. Let it be.

Good luck and safe journeys!

How old/big are the buttons? Unless they're 10-15 years old they won't contain any mescaline and it will be a waste of time. Plus you'll have destroyed what are a pretty endangered species.

You'd be better off sticking to san pedro - less nausea.

If you're going to insist on picking them - read up on how you pick them without killing the roots. And don't pick them all at once, try out one first - it's 90% certain you'll take one taste of them, vomit and put them to one side. So don't pick 20 and then be sat there going "Dude, I don't think I can eat a second mouthful".

You've obviously gotten great advice above. I just have to jump in and react to this ---v

Living where I do, this is just beyond comprehension. God bless ya! =D

i live on the mexican border by the rio grande, so it's somewhat easier to find here. i found a few clumps, but i didn't pick them up. they don't have flowers, just small buds all over. :( i'm assuming they're not mature yet..

i think i'll dig them up and grow them back home... i'm just about to google a tutorial.

i'd like to add that a friend has many growing in a ranch out in tamaulipas, mexico, and i'd like to go there for vacationing, and he mentioned drying and smoking them, is this a possible route of administration.

by the way i'd like to thank you all for your replies :)

i don't get on this site too often, i'm usually on the other drugs forum due to my therapeutic valium use but i'm interested in talking spirituality regarding buddhism and psychedelic experiences with you, would you mind a PM?

Generally no so go right ahead. Though I am not sure when I will have time to respond in depth (holidays and family business this weekend), also I'm personally fine discussing these matters publicly but that's up to you.

No lopez, you can't smoke them, doesn't work - sounds like someone has read carlos castenada "smoking mushrooms" and swallowed that bullshit whole. The only reason castenada assumed you could smoke mushrooms was because he was so clueless he thought all drugs would be like cannabis.

He also made up the term "mescalito" so if anyone starts talking about "mescalito" be aware that they've probably just read that book rather than taken any mescaline.

Don't dig them up man - it sounds like it'll will be 10-15 years before they even mature enough to contain any mescaline. By then you'll have got married and forgotten all about peyote. It won't work anyway - they're a very sensitive and endangered species which is why you can only find them in a few areas of Texas.
