alcohol is always been my thing when i was little;here in my country 8/10 ppl are alcoholics and alcohol is a "culture"
my mom and dad let me drink sicne i was little...the first time i got drunk i was 8 years old,and drank a lot or raspberry liquor...then i remember 4'th grade i was one of the few kids who had beer to drink back home + i never understood how alcohool could be hard to get...i mean maybe in the us....cause here you can be 4 and they will still sell alcohool to you,doesen't matter ) anywayz i stoped drinking when i found some real drugs.
another 'first drug' foe me was weed, but the first times i smoken it i diden't feel too much so diden't like it(well that's untill later when i found real good stuff and got used to smoking daily)
my real first drug, my gateway drug,and the one i've taken for a long time , my firt love(it still is one of my biggest loves) is DXM,i know it's bad side efets and stuff,that's why i quit doing it so much, but still i only have pleasent memories of good times with my good ol' DXM

i just don't they have sepparate categories for me, a least that's what i'm used to...so ok no one sed they're not as addictive as othe rdrus, but i can't say i'm stoned on nicotine, or drugged on alcohool...dunno that just my ideea

That's all fine and dandy, but it doesn't change the fact that both nicotine and alcohol are psychoactive drugs.

Maybe it doesn't make you want to smoke crack the next day but it puts you around people who will make that available to you.

Caffeine was actually the first psychoactive which I consumed, but it was just for the taste, not for the effects. First intentional intoxication was alcohol, which definitely opened a lot of doors for me. I only tried weed because it was mild and widespread, I had intended to try psychedelics before I ever got high, the situation just didn't arise.

I'd say alcohol was much more of a gateway drug than weed, but only because it made me more open-minded and made me understand the cultural value of being fucked up. The way they describe gateway drugs in high school as "you keep looking for the better high, and use harder and harder drugs" never really happened to me. And anyway, alcohol is a lot more dangerous/unhealthy than most drugs I do, but it's a very different kind of intoxication, and I value the unique effects that it has, so it's still the first thing I turn to on Friday nights.

Oh, and alcohol and caffeine are the only two drugs that make me want to do other drugs when I'm on them. The number of times I've almost tripped at two in the morning while drunk as hell or almost popped a pill because my morning cup of coffee made me so happy is far far greater than the number of times I've smoked a bowl and wanted to top it off with anything else. And it seems like everyone who does coke tries it first when they're drunk. Lowered inhibitions are real, and weed is the opposite. So there's another point toward booze being a gateway drug. I love it though, and I think the bias against it among some drug users is a bit silly.
