I think it was Tobacco. I used to walk home from middle school and smoke a cig with friends. Somehow I got sent to the counseling office because someone drove by and saw me smoking. I just said no it must have been someone else. . . these days I don't think that would have happened..

Oxycodone, when I was 15. Found a box of endone 5mg (IR) that had been sitting in the bathroom cupboard for as long as I could remember so I figured I may as well give it a go...

And from there it went, benzos, any opiates I could get my hands on, then weed, booze, cigarettes, dxm is in there somewhere... Still, opiates and benzos are my favourite drug, for sure.

I think perhaps starting with oxycodone set me up for failure more so than starting with booze or weed like normal people would have. Or maybe it would've worked out the same no matter what, who knows.

I smoked a cigarette before I first got drunk, but i've had bits of alcohol when I was littler, so i'd say alcohol.

Why are all you guys saying the first drug you tried was a 'gateway' drug?

The 'gateway' theory in itself is now widely discredited.

I would suggest that people who go on from their initial experiences, with whatever drug would do so regardless of the drug they chose to experiment with first. I believe that it is a range of factors that lead some people to live with or without drugs in their lives and to differing extents.

Which is more, this predisposition which I personally to consider greatly genetic is then effected by other (e.g.social and economic) factors which in addition to this predisposition can make the difference between a recreational and responsible drug user and a problem drug abuser.

Don't forget also that your Mother probably gave you a wide range of pharmaceuticals before you were even out of your nappy. I used to love that banana cough syrup.

I would have hoped that those of you interested enough to educate yourselves about drugs would perhaps consider the shoddy scientific framework upon which the corrupt governments have built their war on drugs and be a bit less enthusiastic about supporting their naff theories.

The gateway theory is bullshit.

Please don't be having a laugh about it. The war on drugs is killing millions all over the world and wrecking the lives of millions more as innocent people languish in prisons further lining the pockets of the sick elite.

Some interesting documentaries, although I'm not suggesting you download stuff illegally, obviously :

i tried a fag wen was 8 . . then strated geting wasted on drink wen i was 13 den started on weed, wedd nd drink deff a gate way 2 other drugs, wen u gt drunk nd realised how fun it was den tried weed nd realised how much u giggled bt den u start nt giggling u fancy sumfing stronger. . eny1 agree??

Wound up first getting drunk a week after my 17th, and then I tried pot the next month. Kept it to those two until I started experimenting with weak psychedelics at the end of senior year. Before all of this started I was completely anti-drug. Looking back now, it seems like a lifetime ago when it's only been about 3 years.

I tried a sip of a beer and a drag of a cigarette when i was 12. Then when I was 13, i smoked weed for the first time.

Did we get any consensus on the gateway drug thing? I read the first few pages but didn't read all 13. Sorry. Anyways, I have gotten into many arguments with certain friends about this subject because I have always believed that pot is not a gateway drug because in my experience, from age 13-18, I stuck with only pot. I tried other things but my pot use never led to daily use of other drugs or anything close. However, in the past year or so, I started drinking and then started using coke and then started using opiates, so I dunno anymore.

I'm gonna say that the first drug I ever used was Dexedrine. I had it prescribed to me when I was 9 years old for ADD. Of course I had no conception of drugs really at that time and surely not enough to know I was taking speed. But I do remember liking it. It actually got me exited about doing homework lol. Then I would go sit in my room with the door shut and build a castle out of legos for 3 or 4 hours. Needless to say I was tweaked the fuck out.
It also taught me at a very young age to be dependent on drugs because my parents and my doctor beat it into my head that I HAD to take my medicine so I could concentrate in school and get my work done. It really bothers me that they still give this kind of shit to kids who don't know what they're taking. They don't know any better.

^yes, i agree, giving speed to kids and teenagers with brains that haven't fully developed yet is very bad for them. not to mention the damage speed does to their bodies.

well, I put down alcohol, because I had like 1/3 of a beer when I was about 13 or so, but I was smoking catnip before that, and the first drug I actually got high off of was MJ

As is the norm in UK, I started with underage drinking of course. Closely followed by weed, then went to university and discovered everything else...

With regards to what someone was saying a few posts ago about the gateway theory; I only tried coke and Es because my weed dealers had them or knew people who had them, so I guess it was a gate way for me. Oh the fun of crossing that gateway though...

alcohol was first followed by cigerettes at the age of 16. first illegal drug was mdma aged 18.
