Westchester County, N.Y., police said they found cocaine in the home of a Valhalla, N.Y., man when they busted him with eight tons of illegal fireworks this week — and have arrested one of his children on a felony drug charge.
David Surace, 30, was charged late Wednesday with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminally possessing a hypodermic instrument, misdemeanors.
Police, executing a search warrant related to the fireworks, said they found 1.3 ounces of cocaine, a vial of steroids and a number of hypodermic needles in a locked safe in the son's room. The cocaine has a street value of about $2,500.
David Surace spent the night in custody and was released Thursday after posting $5,000 cash bail. He's scheduled to return to Mount Pleasant Town Court on July 18.
His father, Stephen Surace, 53, was charged Tuesday with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment, both felonies, and unlawfully dealing in fireworks, a misdemeanor. He was taken into custody late Monday after an undercover officer bought $1,000 worth of fireworks, police said.
Authorities found 16,000 pounds of commercial-grade fireworks — including 6,000 pounds of explosive material — in Surace's basement. The fireworks, which were removed to secure facilities, are worth about $250,000, authorities said.
