As with anywhere, the purity and strength of MDMA varies. I know that an EZ test will only give a yes/no answer as to the contents of a pill or powder. I have been asking around as well as scowling the internet, but really can't find anything to do with testing PURITY.
I'm sure with the right lab equipment it can be done with ease, but what about those who don't have access to all this? I have a friend who swears by burning MDMA as a field test for purity of mdma. This makes sense to me, as a melting test can be used on tons of substances out there, illicit drugs or otherwise.
SWIM says that putting mdma in a spoon or on tinfoil and putting fire to the bottom gives results that speak to the purity of MDMA. Can this be true? Has anyone else heard this?
The theory is that the more potent MDMA should melt, turn clear, and then later turn red, and ending in a deep dark red. A lesser specimen does not turn as dark a red... Or so the theory goes
So I'm wondering how useful this test can actually be?
SWIM has tried this with two different powdered MDMA (molly) and both turned red, however took different times, and different shades of red. Here were SWIMs results
test 1:
1-15seconds: applied constant flame to under of spoon, at about 12s powder turned to clear liquid.
15-25seconds: slow change to a red, slightly more red than caramel (for those who have ever just melted sugar in a pan).
25-30seconds: deepening of colour, liquid almost looks "baked" to spoon now
test 2:
1-15seconds: again constant flame, equal quantity as first test. at 10s this time, powder melted to clear
15-25seconds: faster change to the same red as above, by about 22-24 seconds, colour change continued to an even darker hue then above.
25-30seconds: no real colour change, but the now very dark red liquid started to fizz or boil. No "baked" look like above
MDMA from test 1 is mg per mg stronger than test 2 when taken orally. SWIMs friends have all tried both, blah blah blah, number 1 was stronger.
CONCLUSION (Finally, I know, what a first post!):
Pure MDMA would likely have a higher melting point than adulterants (not all adulterants, but most). I would then assume the longer time it takes to melt to clear and then change colour, the more complete of a reaction was done to form the MDMA, as well as there being less adulterants.
Also SWIM did the above to another sample of MDMA that tested false to EZ tests, but was "sold" as real MDMA. Long story short, melted clear, no red colour, and fizzing/bubbling like in test 2.
Finally, I'm done! What do you think?
