EL PASO, Texas -- Singer-songwriter Fiona Apple was arrested for hashish possession at a West Texas Border Patrol checkpoint after a drug-sniffing dog detected marijuana in her tour bus.

Hudspeth County sheriff's office spokesman Rusty Fleming told the Associated Press on Thursday that Apple spent Wednesday night in the county jail in Sierra Blanca. Apple was released Thursday after posting bail.

Country singer Willie Nelson, rapper Snoop Dogg and actor Armand Hammer also have been arrested in Sierra Blanca on marijuana charges.

Fleming said that after the dog alerted the Border Patrol agent, the artist's bus was searched. Police found the drugs in a backpack - about four grams of marijuana and a plastic bag with about four grams of a clay-like substance that tested positive for hashish were stored in a glass container, the sheriff's office said in a press release.

Apple admitted the drugs were hers, the release said.

The Sierra Blanca checkpoint inspects thousands of vehicles daily and sends the county thousands of drug cases yearly.

Apple "had a little tiny amount of pot and hash," Fleming said. While marijuana possession in small amounts is a misdemeanor, the Texas Controlled Substance Act says possession of hashish in any quantity is a felony.

Hashish is a drug prepared with the resin of the marijuana plant. It contains the same active ingredients as marijuana, but in much higher concentrations.

Apple's publicist, Ambrosia Healy, didn't immediately respond to an email request for comment.

The mugshot is a masterpiece:

'cept with crack, it is done for racism.

It was specifically done to rig elections, I think. Blacks vote overwhelmingly Democrat, so whenever Republicans seize control of a city, county, state or the country, they pass laws to suppress the black vote. They're still doing it: in Florida there are (at least) hundreds of thousands of blacks who can't vote because they're felons. The previous governor (Crist) passed a law to rapidly restore the voting rights of felons, but this governor we have now (Scott) canceled that law when he got into office.

Musicians need to boycott Texas. If they were able to pull off a successful embargo, weed would be legal within the year.

On the one hand no one should be criminally liable for possessing and/or smoking cannabis or its extracts, on the other its good that celebrities aren't always treated as special when it comes to legal action.

can you imagine how shit music would be if musicians didn't smoke cannabis?
roky erickson from the 13th floor elevators spent 4 years in a mental institution in 1969 because he pleaded 'insanity' to a texas pot charge. shame to see that 40+ years on, not a whole lot has changed.

Oh wow busted with a small amount of hash..... Im sure law enforcement is patting each other on the back, they obviously took a major trafficker off the streets

Fiona Apple's bizarre musings over drug arrest

Singer Fiona Apple opened up to fans during a concert in Houston in a bizarre speech about the night she spent in a Texas jail after being arrested for hashish possession last week.
Apple, 35, began by apologising to her jailer for being "attitude-y," and continued with a cryptic rant about four other individuals at the jail and "encoding" things she had heard there.

"First thing is, the guy who runs the jail ... he's a good guy, and I want to apologise to him ... for being attitude-y and saying that I didn't trust him, because I didn't, but by the end of the day, I did," Apple told her audience at the Houston concert. Her comments were recorded on video.

The "Criminal" songstress said that "most people were very nice to me," but she had some stern words for a few who she said were less kind.

"There are four of you out there, and I want you to know that I heard everything you did, I wrote it all down with your names and everything you did and said stupidly thinking that I couldn't hear or see you," she continued.

Apple did not name either the jailer or the four individuals, but threatened to make the latter group "famous anytime you ask."

She described the antics of the four people she alluded to as "inappropriate and probably illegal," but did not offer further details.

Apple then announced that she had ripped up the piece of paper, but not before she "encoded" the information she had written down. She said she would "hold that secret forever ... unless you're interested in being a celebrity."

The concert was Apple's first public appearance since she was released from a Hudspeth County, Texas, jail after posting bail on Thursday. The singer was arrested on a felony drug possession charge late Wednesday night when officials at a border patrol checkpoint found four grams of hashish in her possession after stopping her tour bus.

Rusty Fleming, a spokesman for the sheriff in Hudspeth County, said there were seven other people on the bus, but Apple admitted the drugs were hers and everybody else was allowed to drive on.

He said her brief stay in jail passed "without incident."

Apple's representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The singer won a Grammy for the single "Criminal" off her 1996 debut album "Tidal."

what are the feds slipping into your hash? lol.

I've never lived in Texas but have traveled through a few times. One of the first things I heard from people there is they don't play around even when it comes to small amounts of marijuana they are strict.

Hudspeth Sheriff's Dept. uses gender insult

Here's another article on the same topic.

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/fiona-apple-gaunt-public-appearance-marijuana-possession-arrest-article-1.1168179

In it Rusty Fleming, of the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office says, in an open letter to Fiona:

"First, Honey, I'm already more famous than you, I don't need your help," he began. "However, it would appear that you need mine. Two weeks ago nobody in the country cared about what you had to say. Now that you've been arrested it appears your entire career has been jump started. Don't worry, Sweetie, I won't bill you."

Where I work if you call a woman "Honey" or "Sweetie" it's considered sexual harrassment and grounds for termination. It's using gender to denigrate a female. I am suprised in this day and age to see a public servant and person of authority and power no less, using such words in the obviously demeaning way in which he intended them, and doing so in a public forum.
