Burning a poppy and being caught with an illegal substance are two very separate issues. I know you're feeling bad for your friend (and understandably so) but the law is the law and unfortunately you have to abide by it.
I honestly fail to see how either the poppy burner or the raver is a genuine menace to society, but the former was making a protest of sorts (however emotive, inflammatory or ill-conceived) and the latter was knowingly carrying mephedrone. With that in mind I don't really see how the comparison is valid, or how the poppy-burning chap should be leaned on more heavily.
