my friend has just been to court and got fined £180 for possessing 0.53 grams of mephedrone back in may. what the fuck is going on with the justice system in this country...

Burning a poppy and being caught with an illegal substance are two very separate issues. I know you're feeling bad for your friend (and understandably so) but the law is the law and unfortunately you have to abide by it.

I honestly fail to see how either the poppy burner or the raver is a genuine menace to society, but the former was making a protest of sorts (however emotive, inflammatory or ill-conceived) and the latter was knowingly carrying mephedrone. With that in mind I don't really see how the comparison is valid, or how the poppy-burning chap should be leaned on more heavily.

Sorry to hear about it but at least it's just a fine.

Im sorry but how is burning a poppy is not a menace to society. Burning a poppy is an insult to every person who has lost their lives for this country.

dan i get what you mean- how can somebody get a lesser penalty for commiting an action, which the only motivation i can think of for is to disrespect people who gave everything for us, and cause hurt to those who care about servicemen and women? deliberately offensive and potentially incredibly hurtful actions should have a higher penalty than actions which are unlikely to hurt anyone but the perpertrator imo.

tis utterly shite, hope your mate is at least able to pay the fine ok.

I didn't say I agreed with the method of protest the guy employed but your response demonstrates that it certainly had the desired impact in some quarters. Was the guy's intention to call people's grandads murderers, or was it a protest against British military involvement in illegal imperialist wars? Probably the latter, albeit not very well though out.

Still, is there anything enshrined in law to punish people who disrespect the memory of war veterans? No. So to blame the judicial system for the inequality in the punishments meted out is to completely miss the point, frankly.

So 'causing alarm and distress' warrants a heavier sentence than carrying drugs? In an ideal world, maybe.

At the end of the day, all emotional baggage cast aside, the guy burned a piece of paper. Unfortunately he chose to burn a beloved talisman of the tabloids and received disproportionate coverage as a result. Does the fact he got fined less than somebody carrying drugs mean the country is going to the dogs?

And the bigger irony is British troops burn hundreds of thousands of poppies every day in Helmand

And the cycle is complete.

What's the connection with poppies and British military? The only connection I know of is that crappy Roger Waters album...

what happens if you burn their Koran?

Some silly muslim extremists get pissed off and have a tantrum.

If they want to mess about burning little bits of paper shaped like poppies I would suggest that maybe we can be a bit more civilised and just ignore them.

Unless you think we should behave more like them in these kinds of situations?

Although £180 is harsh, it's nothing to do with poppies and it could have been worse.

Depends on where you are in the country - some police and judges view drug users as the lowest scum on earth and the biggest threat to society there is. They will be trying to set an example.

muslim burns poppies on remembrance day and gets fined £50
Would it have been better had he not been a Muslim?

When did insulting people become illegal?

How many people appreciate the irony of poppies symbolising support for the Afghanistan war?

actions intended to cause alarm or distress are not legal. this is what burning the poppy in that way constitutes IMO, and is why, IMO, in general, actions which do not knowingly cause harm and distress should have a lesser penalty. ideally i wouldn't fine either, if people want to make themselves look like totally heartless cunts, or take drugs, they should be free to do either.
