As many of you know, I was in a pretty bad motorcycle accident last year. I broke 2 fingers, my wrist, my elbow, 2 ribs, my L3 vertebra, lacerated my kidney and ruptured (and lost) my spleen. Surprisingly the biggest issue I had out of it all was with the wrist, specifically the titanium plate and 8 screws they used to hold the bone together. For the chronic pain, I was placed on oxycodone and my usage peaked at about 320mg per day (80x2 twice a day). Since a surgery to remove the hardware from my wrist, I have been able to taper down significantly (to 120mg a day right now) with the ultimate goal to reduce my usage entirely. My schedule is a decrease each 5, with 15 day scrips at a time (filled each 5 days).

This Monday (yesterday) I was supposed to see my doctor for a new prescription, but he and his family had been vacationing on the US East coast, and so were trapped my hurricane Irene. I called the clinic and there was nothing they could do. Their only other doctor was swamped and had absolutely no time to see me. So there I was, Monday morning, without a single pill, looking forward to WDs. And while I can handle the physical side of things, the one side effect I get is severe depression, to the point that I get suicidal. I really am scared that without my pills, I might take my own life.

I was in a panic, no idea what to do. I called around and managed to find a doctor with an immediate opening at a different clinic. A doctor who is vehemently opposed to oxycodone. I brought all my old receipts for all the oxy I was on any my pill bottles. He seemed unhappy about the whole affair, particularly the number of "psychotropic" I was on but he did as I asked.

I went in, saw the doctor, and left with a scrip for 12 x 20mg oxy IR, along with a warning that he would not be doing the same in future

Question: Has anyone else had an issue similar to this? What did you do? Was the doctor understanding or did you get a great big bowl of f*** off?

Doctors are becoming more & more scared of the fact that if they keep prescribing opiates to patients, they may be the next in line to be arrested. If you take out the root of the problem (DEA) problem goes away but until that happens, you have to find a doctor that doesnt care about prescribing what ever to patients & there are doctors out there like this.

sorry to hear the doc was a pain. but hey, you got your pills.

i've been in similar situations, seeing a GP because i procrastinated to make my psych appointment and he is always full for like 2 months. even though i explain what is up and i have an appointment with my regular psych in a few weeks, i've had docs write it with 5 refills and i've had docs tell me not to come back to them for more. silly.

this would be better suited blog entry than a BDD post, as there is not much of a question. PM me if you disagree.
