As many of you know, I was in a pretty bad motorcycle accident last year. I broke 2 fingers, my wrist, my elbow, 2 ribs, my L3 vertebra, lacerated my kidney and ruptured (and lost) my spleen. Surprisingly the biggest issue I had out of it all was with the wrist, specifically the titanium plate and 8 screws they used to hold the bone together. For the chronic pain, I was placed on oxycodone and my usage peaked at about 320mg per day (80x2 twice a day). Since a surgery to remove the hardware from my wrist, I have been able to taper down significantly (to 120mg a day right now) with the ultimate goal to reduce my usage entirely. My schedule is a decrease each 5, with 15 day scrips at a time (filled each 5 days).
This Monday (yesterday) I was supposed to see my doctor for a new prescription, but he and his family had been vacationing on the US East coast, and so were trapped my hurricane Irene. I called the clinic and there was nothing they could do. Their only other doctor was swamped and had absolutely no time to see me. So there I was, Monday morning, without a single pill, looking forward to WDs. And while I can handle the physical side of things, the one side effect I get is severe depression, to the point that I get suicidal. I really am scared that without my pills, I might take my own life.
I was in a panic, no idea what to do. I called around and managed to find a doctor with an immediate opening at a different clinic. A doctor who is vehemently opposed to oxycodone. I brought all my old receipts for all the oxy I was on any my pill bottles. He seemed unhappy about the whole affair, particularly the number of "psychotropic" I was on but he did as I asked.
I went in, saw the doctor, and left with a scrip for 12 x 20mg oxy IR, along with a warning that he would not be doing the same in future
Question: Has anyone else had an issue similar to this? What did you do? Was the doctor understanding or did you get a great big bowl of f*** off?
