An inmate in a high security prison, believed to be convicted gangland killer, Carl Williams, has died after he suffered head injuries and went into cardiac arrest.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics arrived at Barwon Prison about 1.18pm today to find the man in a critical condition.

Two independent sources have said the man was Williams.

A police spokeswoman confirmed there had been a death as a result of an assault at Barwon Prison.

‘‘Victoria Police can confirm that a male prisoner has died following an assault which occurred earlier this afternoon,’’ the spokeswoman said.

Police have not released the man’s age or what he was imprisoned for.

Homicide squad detectives have driven to Barwon Prison to take control of the investigation into the death of notorious underworld identity Carl Williams.

Williams died after he was attacked by fellow inmates in the prison early this afternoon.

An autopsy will be conducted to see if he died as a direct result of the attack or due to a heart attack.

Williams had been on a modified diet and had lost weight since he was sentenced to a minimum of 33 years in 2007 over four murders.

Detectives will investigate whether the attack was sparked by reports today that reported police had paid Williams daughters school fees.

UPDATE 2.55pm: CRIME kingpin Carl Williams is dead after suffering head injuries in an assault at Barwon Prison this afternoon.

The multiple killer and drug trafficker was critically injured in an assault at maximum security Barwon Prison this afternoon.

Williams' lawyer Rob Stary confirmed the death a short time ago.

Carl's father George declined to comment to the media at his Broadmeadows home this afternoon.

Ambulance officers were called to the jail, near Geelong, but Williams could not be resuscitated.

Police will travel to the scene today as part of their investigation.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed that a Barwon prisoner had died after being assaulted, but would not confirm that it was Williams.

"We can confirm that a prisoner has died as a result of an assault earlier this afternoon.''

Melbourne underworld figure Mick Gatto said he had heard unconfirmed rumours about Williams having died but said that was all he had heard.

"I would rather let dead dogs lie,'' he told AAP.

"If you hear any more let me know but I would rather not comment on him.''

He said Williams was "certainly not'' a friend.

Williams was serving life imprisonment in Barwon's maximum security Acacia unit with a non-parole period of 35 years for ordering the murders of three underworld rivals and the failed conspiracy to murder a fourth person.

He was found guilty of murdering Jason Moran, Lewis Moran and Michael Marshall.

He had one child, a daughter, with his ex-wife Roberta Williams, a convicted drug trafficker.

The Herald Sun revealed this morning that taxpayers paid the private school fees for Williams' daughter.

Williams' father George was released from prison in June 2009 after serving a sentence for drug trafficking, while his mother Barbara was found dead in 2009 after an apparent overdose.

He has been talking to the police as it's been reported while back police took him to a hotel so he could eat nice food and drink a few vb's just to sweeten him up to talk...

tax payers paying for private school fees .... and of course a reduced prison sentence would have been in the works ..

It just said on ten news from his lawyer who spoke to him this morning that Carl was very upset and concerned about the article about the $8000 paid by police for his childs school fees which was in this mornings frontpage of the Herald son newspaper in melbourne.

They do get the newspapers in jail so the article was put in this mornings frontpage paper so inmates would have got copy at around 7am-8am ..... and then Carls killed round 2pm ..

I think that says it all .... Is the Herald son in melbourne to blame ... ? I think they could have pre warned Carl and the police what they were going to publish as so he could be moved into protection and thus he would be alive now.

TAXPAYERS paid the private school fees for the daughter of multiple murderer, drug dealer and underworld figure Carl Williams.

The $8000 payment was made by Victoria Police command for Williams' child to attend a top private school.

A letter written by the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office, and signed by its managing principal solicitor in February, shows police admit they paid for Williams' daughter to attend the school.

The letter refers to "the payment of school fees for (Mr Williams') child in the amount of approximately $8000".

The prestigious school has several campuses, rolling sports fields and a country property for camps.

It boasts about its academic achievement.

Williams, who is serving a 35-year prison sentence for several murders, was a key player in Melbourne's brutal underworld war that claimed about 30 lives and took police more than a decade to bring under control.

The letter also shows that Victoria Police offered to pay a $750,000 debt owed to the tax office by Carl's father George Williams, as first revealed by the Herald Sun in February.

That offer was withdrawn following legal advice.

The Herald Sun is unable, for legal reasons, to outline why the school fee payment was made.

Williams' former partner Roberta was tight-lipped.

"I've got no comment about that, but you have a great night," Ms Williams said.

The State Government and Victoria Police command refused to comment about the school payment.

Opposition crime prevention spokesman Andrew McIntosh said Premier John Brumby and Police Minister Bob Cameron should explain why Victorian taxpayers picked up the bill.

Crime Victims Support Association president Noel NcNamara said the school payment showed a disregard for Williams' victims.

"What's going on in there? They say the underworld looks after their own, but now it seems force command has taken the view we've got to look after them too," Mr McNamara said.

"It was bad enough when they took George and Carl on their little holiday down the coast. Are they going to pay the university fees as well?"

In sentencing Williams, Supreme Court judge Betty King said there were "no other appropriate penalties for crimes of this nature, gangland executions carried out ... in the presence of frightened men, women and children".

Justice King said she was concerned Williams could become a cult hero.

"You are a killer, and a cowardly one who employed others to do the actual killing," the judge said.
