Filtering tableting aids out of pills

Hi guys

I am actually an animal rescuer, so this might seem like a weird place to be posting a thread, but I have an animal in need and I am hoping someone here might be able to help me with some practical advice...

I need to be able to give some antibiotics intravenously. There are genuine reasons I can’t just get a vet to give the animal an iv shot (I can explain why if anyone is interested).
Anyway I need to be able to filter the non active non soluable ingredients out of some augmention tablets to make them suitable for injection.
I can list the tableting aids so I will at the bottom of this post, in case that makes a difference to technique.

I did a bit of a google and found out that cigarette filters can remove the larger molecules but not the smaller, and that an injection/needle filter can remove the smaller particles. However where I live we are in covid 19 lockdown and getting anything that I don’t already have on hand or can buy at a supermarket is going to take too long. Even the supermarket is gong to take longer than I would like as my animal got very sick tonight and tomorrow is Good Friday and not even the supermarket is open (and I don’t smoke so don’t have cig filters on hand)

I also don’t have anything like coffee filters.

Is there anything else I can use that I am likely to have on hand, to filter the crap out of the augmention (according to my research the active ingredients are soluable at close to human ph (does that mean I should maybe dissolve in saline rather than water? Have sterile saline here))

I also read some filters retain some of the active ingredient. I am not too concerned about that as long as a reasonable % of the drug is still there and I can get some idea of how much might be retained so I can adjust dose. The animal I am treating is very small, so only requires about 1/5 of a standard augmention tablet anyway.

If anyone out there has some suggestions on how I can filter these augmention tablets to make them save for iv injection (I have sterile needles and syringes as I use them for various rescue situations) I wold really appreciate their reply, and you may save this lovely girls life...

As above if you want to know exactly why I am needing to iv inject without getting a vet to do it, I can explain but it’s a slightly longish story..

Here are the tab letting aids in the tablet according to government website for medicines

Core:
Magnesium stearate
Microcrystalline cellulose
Silicon dioxide
Sodium starch glycollate

Coat:
Dimeticone
Hypromellose
Macrogol 4000
Macrogol 6000
Opadry film coat
Titanium dioxide

Actually here is a link discussing the technique I want to try. Hardly any avian vets where I live and none who have used this technique or in most cases heard of it, and none that will try it. As far as I can tell, worst case scenario my lovely girl needing treatment will have an uncomfortable experience and no result, best case it will save her life and her legs. So I figure it’s worth trying (In case you are worried about the bird, I have spent literally hundreds of hours researching treatment of the birds I rescue and have experience in basic skills such as injection techniques etc and would not attempt anything I didn’t feel reasonably confident of, or anything that a vet was able to treat effectively for me - and it’s not like I’m considering doing open heart surgery on her lol).

I’m confident in my ability to give the treatment, it’s just that I don’t have a way to obtain an injectible version of a suitable antibiotic right now, so was wondering if there is a way to convert the tablet antibiotic I do have on hand to iv.

If I don’t have on hand anything suitable to do this with reasonable confidence it will be safe and effective I won’t do it, but there is the potential that this could be life changing for this bird, and as these type of infection are common in these birds, learning to do this, if it helps this girl, will also most likely help more birds in future.

So please, if you are reading this and thinking (I know how she could dissolve and filter that tablet... please post a reply :)

Or if you can suggest any other place I can get a quick (within 24 hrs) reply..

Thanks in advance

Any on the fly filtering methods are going to be inadequate. Most crude filters, cotton, cig filters, etc. are going to leave relatively large chunks of insoluble binder in solution. I don't like saying this but cigarette filters are probably going to be the best impromptu filtering method readily available at a moments notice.

Also don't mean to sound like i'm condoning poor IV techniques and shoddy filters but plenty of IV addicts have used these methods for years. It's very risky without proper micron filters and good IV technique but it can be pulled off in a pinch.

extremely interested- I am also in rescue. I’ve only ever been able to give oral antibiotics- and sub-q fluids.
