films: Movies that are a visual and auditory feast?

I dont really like Shakespeare (duh....even after having to endure 4 years of reading him in highschool :p) but I gotta mention this one. This is my most favorite movie adaptation of a Shakespeare play. =D
)

This is my favorite Shakespeare adaptation, and happens to be a visually impressive film as well.

They made a movie out of the Fountain, now this I have to see

This film The Fountain, is an original work (I believe) from director Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream).

Are you thinking of The Fountainhead, the novel by Ayn Rand?

Barry Lyndon.
Hell yes. Not the most entertaining film (though I think the first half is great), but it's probably the most beautiful film i've seen, sound and visual wise. I am particularly fond of the "Women of Ireland" track that is repeated a few times throughout the film.

Also, Apocalypse Now, Amelie (looove the soundtrack), Fantasia (walks all over the 2000 version, in my opinion), Mary Poppins, Picnic at Hanging Rock.

Pans Labyrinth, House of Flying Daggers, Memoirs of a Geisha, Gangs of New York.

They are all unreal movies, I agree Moulin Rouge is a wonderful movie as well as The 5th Element and of course The Matrix.

A lot of the films mentioned above are some of my all time favorites, like the Fifth Element, Spirited Away.. others like Baraka, and Kooyanqatsi (spell?) are also amazing. I actually got to watch Kooyanqatsi on the big screen with the director there to answer questions! The theater played the trilogy over a weekend.

I agree that Waking Life falls short, probably because its aims are too lofty.. and Ethan Hawke.. but it is visually entertaining and all the same thought provoking in my experience. I honestly loved what Linklater did with A Scanner Darkly, but unlike Waking Life I would not recommend it whilst tripping.

I also wanted to add DJ Q-bert's Wavetwisters. Not just an auditory adventure, the animation/visuals are well done and fun. [edit] Obviously I missed the last page before I posted, sorry.. :\

A little off topic, but not completely: One of the people interviewed in Waking Life, Caveh Zahedi, is a pretty interesting guy. It's like he's almost made the mushroom mythos mainstream, and what I mean by that is that in his films he tries to use himself or his art as a means of catalyzing/expressing the knowledge we all glean from psychedelic experiences. For example in "I Was Possessed by God," he eats a lot of mushrooms and sits in front of his camera.. I'm sure a lot of people on BL do that too and are wondering how the hell he made a career out of it! .. ha.. I like "I Don't Hate Los Vegas Anymore," where he tries to convince his father and step brother to take ecstacy with him. http://www.cavehzahedi.com

Sorry.. I hope people find this interesting and it's not just me! I have an unhealthy appetite for film. And sorry for not bothering to spell Kooyanqatsi right. This is turning into a great list of films!:D

Last of the Mohicans,
This movie defines auditory and visual feast. Probably one of the greatest composed scores ever made, and the cinematography is absolutely amazing.

all of the above are great but the number one movie for a visual and auditory feast has got to be

BARAKA

Thank you!! I was hoping someone would mention it.

Baraka is one movie worth at least renting a HUGE screan HDTV and home theatre system for. It is just breathtaking. And if you like the -qatsii trilogy, you'll LOVE baraka.

Other than that, Aesthetically beautiful movies for me include:

- Angel's Egg
- Natural Born Killers
- Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
- The Fountain
- House of Flying Daggers

I know I'm missing an important one but I can't remember...

Pans labrynth is absolutely amazing and I cant reccomend it enough.
Anything Ghost in the Shell and natural born killers are good too.

while i had heard that 'the constant gardener' was a great movie, i didn't expect it to be as visually appealing as it was. lots of beautiful landscapes.
