Not the greatest plot or acting, but stylish. It seemed to take a lot of influence from the World of Darkness roleplaying games (Vampire: The Masquerade et. al.)

Yeah it did at that, to the point that White Wolf, the company that released the Vampire: The Masquerade system (amongst others) put up a law suit against the movie claiming a whole heap of stuff was directly taken from their stuff.

Heres a Penny Arcade comic strip about it: http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2003-09-08&res=l

and the corresponding news article: http://www.penny-arcade.com/news.php3?date=2003-09-08

The law suit got thrown out. Not really surprisingly.

Listen to them, the children of the night.

What frivolous lawsuits they make.

I think they're just upset that Kindred: The Embraced TV series sucked so much assblood.

I enjoyed it for the first time but it is not the kind of movie I will watch again. I thought it was cool that the werewolves were called lycans after lycanthropy...

The acting might have been weak, but it was one of the TIGHTEST (not necessarily best) backstories in a movie ive seen in a long while...there were NO holes

There may have been no holes, but there wasn't that much of a backstory/plot. Yes it was there and was a little involved, but this didn't make up for the fact that overall the film didn't really do that much...

Actually, I think it was a pretty damn involved backstory for a pop action movie.

Ok, for a pop-action movie I will agree with you. I was thinking more along the lines of 'Film.' Eh frames of reference make things interesting :)

This film really disappointed me. Someone mentioned in one of their posts about vampires and werewolves basically using guns way too much, this got boring. No solid presence from any of the characters. Dont want to post any spoilers but there was so many little things that pissed me off with this movie, not a good vampire movie at all. If anyone even thinks about comparing this to Blade then that is ridiculous, Blade by far is the best vampire movie ever, will be one of the most impressive and consistent trilogies also IMO.

Ciao.

I think the decapitation was weak as hell... the dialogue could've been a helluva lot better, but over all.. i loved this movie.

I remember walking out of this film thinking how it wasn't great but that it wasn't particularly bad, either. I think the biggest disapointment to me is the huge potential they had with the whole Vampire vs. Wearwolf premise and what they could have done with the film had they had better acting and perhaps developed the Lycan back story a bit more. I am a huge fan of wearwolves in general (Heck, I even really liked American Wearwolf in Paris).

I think there is a good chance we will see a sequel to this film - clearly the story was left open for one (or more). If that's the case we might se a better director pick it up and actually develop the dialog/story a bit more to my liking.

Oh, cool sidenote: Remember the Lycan that was played by the giant black guy with the hauntingly deep and gravelly sounding voice? Well, that is actually his REAL voice. (Talk about going through life as a true scary ass mother fucker!) It also turns out that he has a postgraduate degree in molecular genetics.

"In addition, Underworld's vampires seemed pretty pathetic on the intimidation/bad ass scale since their only power seemed to be that they could use guns. "

THANK YOU! At times during this movie I'd forget if we were watching vampires or fashionably dressed humans...It seems the only vampires with power were the elders, and even they could do little...I enjoy the subject material, and some of the scenes in this movie, but I never felt I was watching complex creatures with different motivations,(and the motivations they supplied for the story hardly seem realistic and complicated), philosophies, or even a sense of drive, save killing werewolves..Ok idea, but end results ended up quite short of even the small standards I set for this film...

i watched this movie and i diddnt realy understand it. pretty damn good effect n shit. i thought it was juz gona be a ripp off of like Blade or The Crow or sumthin. overall i think it was a pretty decent movie (diddnt like how the vampires were pretty weak) big fan of the werewolfs and vamps

I thought the movie had a lot of style but thats about it.
I also thought the back story was lame, vampires and lycans all come from the same anti-bodies?! Whatever. Also why would the elders go to sleep, and why wasn't an elder from the american coven awake? Also what really happened between Craven an the head werewolf dude. to much left un said for my tastes.

Was I the only one who snickered every time Craven would speak? This movie (other than Beckinsale) was HORRIBLEY casted. It's a movie I would watch again but not buy. I agree with SG, we will most likely see a sequel with a better director, hopefully.

LOL! I did - everything he said was through gritted teeth. He tried WAY to hard.

I like the concept but there was some cheesy ass acting involved. Aside from the bad acting I really liked this spin on vampire/werewolves story. I also loved the idea of century skipping n shit w/ the older vampires. I loved how they left it open for a sequel.

bill nighy (the guy who played viktor) was also in shawn of the dead and his acting seemed to me to be identical. it was almost funny. overall i think that i'd have to agree with you on the quality of acting in that movie (i might argue for kate and scott, however, and michael sheen) but when you consider what len weisman did with the little moneyt hat he had you can't help but be impressed. and with the money that it pulled in we can expect a much bigger budget for the sequel, which will include much of the prequel that asmodeus mentioned. i know that i'm looking forward to it.
