Film: Troy- extremely good!

You obviously never read the Illiad...THAT WAS WHAT HALF THE BOOK WAS>

I love how all these critics of movies judge it before they even know what its based on.

I have no shame in admitting that I haven't read the Illiad. But since when did it become a prerequisite to read the source material for a movie? A movie, no matter what it's based on is just that, a MOVIE. And as a movie, i thought the above scenes were ludicrous.

And if what you say about "half the book" is true, then whatever interest I had in reading The Illiad in the future has now reduced significantly. I haven't got the time to waste on stories with retarded plots.

gotta read both...they're probably a few of my favorite books, ever. up there with 1984 and crime & punishment. seriously, the iliad is so good. i gotta read it again i think...but i'm drunk right now. working my way through the baroque cycles right now (neal stephenson).

DD,
After watching Troy, I safely assumed it doesn't compare in quality to The Illiad. Although I didn't hate the movie (by a long shot), there was bits that I found just plain stupid. The dumbest of which I specified in my original rant.
Hashish2020 then came along and stated that one of the things I mentioned was a major part of the book. Being as how I haven't read it and I don't know Hashish2020 whatsoever, I have no reason to doubt what he is saying, even though it stunned me to think such a major piece of literature can be so silly.
After having a brief chat with a friend tonight, he mentioned that God/s were involved in such scenes. Now THAT makes all the difference.
People (characters) can get away with making seemingly illogical decisions, when there is a reason that superceeds logical reasoning. Divine intervention/inspiration/motivation can be this.

Thanks, Mechanix, 1984 is my favourate book so far (followed closely by Zen & The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance). Seeing you compare The Illiad to it has rejuvinated (and peaked) my interest in finding a copy of it.

Oh i'm not really attacking you here, but alot of Greek Lit seems silly, but it all has a point. I haven't seen Troy, and maybe you're right about it or wrong, i dunno. I'll see for myself and develop my own 2cents i guess.

I just thought calling those epics written by Homer retarded as a bit of a stretch. Alot of our modern novel and movie setups/design can be traced back to Homer in many many ways.

And yes 1984 is a great book.. i saw a movie based on it in the video store.. without wanting to create a thread about it.. could any ONE person give me their 2cents about it.. either in this thread of via PM.

Love the story, and I thought it was put together exceptionally well. Can't deny that I think Brad Pitt is a TERRIBLE dramatic actor and I could never get myself to believe he was Achilles. I really think they could've done a much better casting call with that one. I also wish they would've toned down Orlando's wishy-washyness, even though Paris was a bit of a floof. Like someone else said, when he was using his bow and arrows I kept giving him blonde hair and elf ears. As for Helen, I wish they would've given her more of a personality and less dramatic close ups (she's gorgeous though). Eric Bana as Hector was absolutely amazing- I knew what was going to happen to him but still teared up because I literally fell in love with him lol

Overall, 4/5 for attempt to recreate a very difficult story, 6/5 for Eric Bana, about a 2/5 for Pitt. He should stick to looking pretty and not try to be a dramatic actor.

brad pitts butt shots more than made up for his lack of acting abililty, IMO. Lol! And i take it back....i think the actress who portrayed Helen of Troy was very mediocre and boring looking. Super! whatta waste :p

I hated Troy. I thought it was extremely bad. The cast looked very Californian (Achilles' mom and Helen looked like porn stars of succeeding generations). There were a lot of cheesy shots. Brad Pitt's move (hopping to one side and stabbing someone) was funny.

Pitt, Bana, and O'Toole were great. But the movie sucked overall. All that hype for such a crappy movie. Aaargh. I cannot believe I was excited to see it.

^^^tell us how you really feel. :D Hello Dt!

You mean to tell me Greeks don't look like Californians? Oh dear god no! My image is ruined!

i had nothing better to do, so i watched troy... it's alright for hollywood fare- most people i know would have a better time watching this than reading the iliad- but not me. there were a lot of problems with the film-making, with how much money they were spending on sets and props- you think they could've gotten some better cinematography going on, and the cgi was simply "ok"...

performances, yeah- bana stands out, aside from him i think everyone else was just there for a paycheck or miscast. i'll give it two out of five stars.

I quite enjoyed the film, although I'm really partial to historical movies, especially those with epic scenes and great actors...I find it amusing that so many like O'Toole and Bana, as it was they and Bloom and Pitt my gf and I really like too, although I think her liking of them and disliking of Helen and the actress who played her caused her to root for Troy and of course be ultimately disappointed when they inevitabitly lose...I also liked Cox's performance of Agamenmon...A truly power hungry and determined character, they should have included the sacrifice of his daughter to the
Gods in this...I will probably see the movie sometime again, and perhaps comment on it later when I am not so drunk :)

speaking of brad pitt's "move", me and my friends were doing that one day...it's actually really fun to do. try it out!

just saw it today, i thought it was a great film. not too many movies i call film. for some reason there is more respect to call a motion picture a film and not a movie. Troy definitely deserves to be called a film. I guess i am wierd in this way. anyways, it was fuckin great and Diane Kruger is fuckin hot.

my duece centavos. peace.

Aside from a couple of great battle scenes (hector v archilles was awesome), this film was just plain boring. A high school drama class could write a more interesting script than this.

I thought this movie was awful when I saw it this summer, and now that I'm reading the Iliad for a mythology class I dislike it even more. It horrible if taken on its own, and when compared to the Iliad itself its just complete trash.

WOW!
Better late than never

Overall a very good movie but i just don't like it. I know bugger all about greek mythology and history but for me, the bad guys won.

I am a traditionalist with movies, i don't like the bad guys winning, even if history dictates that that must be the way. If it had to turn out this way, make me dislike characters like Hector, not side with them. Pales into comparison against Braveheart but i would say in the same genre, but not the same grade. Does make me want to read up on my Greek history and mythology but being inherently lazy i doubt this will happen. I'm just pissed off about how this movie panned out, and i guess giving me a reaction like this makes it a decent movie.

But i don't have to like it

I liked this flick, give it 4 out of 5 stars... but there were plenty of weak points.

-I enjoyed the twist on the religious implications and how they tried so hard to make Achillies so human... but he's a fucking MYTH! Part of what made him great WAS the myth... it was the myth that allowed him to be remembered thorughout the ages. I didn't have to see the greek gods in the sky a la Clash of the Titans, but I would have liked to have had seen some better explorations into where all the myths were born of. For example, supposedly no weapon was able to cut Achillies. His armor was supposed to be unlike any other on the planet (covering WAAAAAAAY more than his chest, forearms, shins and head like the movie armor), as was his sword. The movie put him on the battlefield in a fucking leather skirt. A simple twist could have been that he had STEEL armor and weapons, instead of the bronze that everyone else had... steel would seem magical to those people, and would have easily made Achillies seem invunrable and wicked fast on the battlefield. But then of course, if you covered Brad Pitt in armor, his fans might get upset...

-Could they have had a WHITER cast? C'mon Hollywood, these are Mediteranian people here, not blue-eyed blonde haired northern europeans. Not to mention the men in this movie (aside from the old fuckers and Tyler Mayne >Ajax<) were shaved smooth as a babies ass. I know the ladies dig the hairless chest thing, but a man from this region, time and era should have body hair more like Robin Williams than Orlando Bloom.

^ i thought the occasional scottish accent made it quite amusing at times. I kept waiting for someone to scream, they may take our lands, but they'll never take our freedom!
