thirteen

I went to see the movie Thirteen today. It was very realistic and it struck home for me...it was a little too close to my own life, so it made me squirm through most of it. Has anyone else seen it and if so, what did u think?

Welcome to bluelight!

We have a forum all about movies and discussion of movies, so I'm going to send this over there..

Yeah I saw it a few nights ago. I thought it was a great movie and didn't shy away from the realstic things. But I found myself thinking they were 15 or 16 instead of 13. And yes I understand that this was based on the one young actress' experiance, it was an exception not a rule. I know I might get jumped all over for this, but I don't remember anyone I know being like that at 13. Maybe a few beers and some making out--some kid gave or received some head but nothing to the extent of what was portrayed in this movie.
I guess it was good that the kids were young and it sort of added to the slap in the face of shock that you received.
All in all I think it was a great movie that didn't tie up nicely at the end. (thats a good thing in my book)

I thought it was OK. A bit too melodramatic for me. And if the girls were 16 instead of 13, it wouldn't have even been so shocking. In fact, the way they dressed, I kept forgetting that they were so young, and kept thinking they were closer to 16.

Uhmm...they huffed keyboard duster, smoked pot, did some acid, drank a whole bunch, and then there was this guy's 'Voodoo Juice'. And I'm not really sure what it contained. Probabally just alcohol.

I cried it struck too close to home. Alot of my friends got heavy into shit like that, including a girl who matched the lead actress almost perfectly. It was scary because it was almost too realistic. I love the movie though.

I loved this movie.... I had a really really awful day the night I saw it but it helped me realize how things are all relative (from my journal):

Every thing about the girl in the movie (except for the blowjob and extreme drug usage) reminded me of what I was in 7th grade, and how ugly it was. This was when I realized that "atleast I'm not like I use to be"... "atleast I can respect myself now". Things aren't so bad.

i've heard really good things about this movie, and it's high up on my list of movies to see, but only when i'm in the mood for a good tear-jerker. i have a feeling this movie will hit really close to home for me.

btw- this movie is called 'thirteen' because one of the main writers was 13.

Yeah, I read that she and another person wrote the entire screenplay in 6 days or something.

as is everything when you are thriteen.
it seemed saturated and overly done... yet realistic to too many that lived that sort of life.
the camera work, angles and colors tints didnt bother me... they added to the off kilter dizzing up life way throws you around at that age.

I saw this movie today and I thought it was pretty good. I found it relected the life of people more in their late teens than early teen though (I guess them being 13 makes the movie more shocking). The girl who's life it was based on (the best freind) did a really good job of acting in my opinion.

The confrontation with the parents at the end of the movie hit a bit close to home with me and i felt uncomfy watching it but I guess that means the movie was good.

It was a shame that we didnt know exactly what drugs they were taking. :p

One thing that pissed me off big time was the betrayal off the friend at the end of the movie- she's like i love you and then fully stabs the chic in the back. :X I find that with the experiences that they go through the bond would have been stronger than that because i know that with my druggie mates we are hell tight and non of that shit would have happened. Maybe this betrayal happened to show that everything in their lives were just superficial.

anyway I still liked the movie. I think it should be playing at more cinemas though- its only on at two here in Perth.

Yah I thought it was good - a little sobering though. Made me feel real bd for how I have treated my mother in the past.
And yes I think it was totally harsh how evie turned her back on the other girl in the end. I just don't think it was so realistic. I mean, I know that 13 year olds can be very fickle, but when youre dealing with drugs and that, you've totally got to keep your friends close.

did all your friends keep you close? friends of friends?
how quick is a 'child' to say oh no! thats not my pot im holding it for ____ >friend's name...?

I know how this feels... you just want somebody to love you and the more you reach out the more they recoil sometimes...

I saw this movie months ago when it was in theatres. I think August or September maybe? I forget.

I liked it though. I wasn't anything like that at 13 and I remember thinking during the movie "these are some seriously fucked up 13 year olds I was nothing like this"... but I guess I just wasn't aware some people were like that at that age.

It was a good movie.

Wow, I guess I am the only person that was disappointed by this film.
From what I had read previous to seeing this was she had a horrible family life and went deep into the world of drugs and sex.

Ok, her family life was NOT that bad. So her dad didn't have much to do with them. BIG DEAL. Her mother obviously loved her dearly and worried about her very much. And they didn't have tons of money. So what! They had food and did not look as if they were living at the poverty level. And her mom's boyfriend had a past drug problem. But he never hurt her, abused her, or any such thing. He actually seemed to care about her, for example he made her bed for her.
So she did a few drugs. Wow. There was never a life threatening moment, or addiction problem.
She was expermenting with boys, but she never had intercourse with them, although she was a bit slutty.

So my point is, BIG FUCKING DEAL. She was a whiny ass spoiled little girl whose friend fucked her over. It was realistic, but I was just tired of reading how bad this girl's life was. It did bring up that feeling of how bad you want acceptance from your peers at that age. That was captured well. And how friends at that age can turn on you on a dime.

I am just glad that this movie didn't live up to my expectations. I wrote a LOT when I was 13, and I was worried some one had beat me to the story I wanted to tell. But they didn't, so I'm glad....
