The Salton Sea vs. Spun
being a huge fan of drug movies....especially ones involving methamphetamines....i love these two films...i even go so far as to quote the Salton Sea in my sig....but all this begs the question...which is the better tweaker film......lets break it down
Main Character
Tom Van Allen/Danny Parker (Val Kilmer) Vs. Ross (Jason Schwartzman)
i found Kilmer's character to be far more intresting and in-depth than Ross...at times Ross annoyed me with his whinning over his ex-girlfriend...but he did hammer out a more-than-accurate portrayal of a guy on a 4 day binge....still Kilmer's methed-out monologues and of-kilter logic made him a very likeable character in the film.
Advantage:The Salton Sea
Story:
i loved the idea of the Salton Sea....meth was the main article of the film but the story was a damn fine detective noir narrative...as far as i can tell spun didnt really have a story...or a plot for that matter...in of itself this also was brilliant because it defined the whole "too much energy but nothing productive to do" ethos of the tweaker...it speeds along making you feel like your the one on the binge and not the characters in the movie, and when everyone crashes....you crash as well
Advantage:Spun
the Dealer
Pooh Bear (Vincent D'nofrio) vs. Cook (Mickey Rourke)
this is a tough one....i enjoyed both roles by both actors...they both made me laugh and both pulled off a pretty accurate portrayal of guys who sit in trailers all day cooking and smelling of cat piss....however...Rourkes character was one dementional and rather stereotypical....perhaps this was intentional (again going back to the whole theme of Spun being a meth binge on film) showing the repetition and and monotony of Cook's life (prossibly contributing to his demise at the end). Pooh Bear on the other hand was we-researched and studied for...Vincent D'Nofrio being the insane method actor that he is...overall i found him more intresting and enjoyable.....
Advantage: the Salton Sea
the Cops
Anthony LaPaglia and Doug Huctinson Vs. Peter Stormare
again....this is another tough one to call...we all hate cops....and in both films we hate them even more because they're all dirty...but the defining thing that seperates the two is the fact that LaPaglia and Hutchisons' character were motivated by money....wereas Stormare and his partners' character (his name escapes me) were not only dirty....but nothing more than tweakers themselves! a cop that takes your drugs is bad enough....but what about one that takes them and does them? hey pig thats my stash! plus i loved them bumping their shit off of their badges...classic...
Advantage:Spun
the Mexican:
John Leguizamo Vs. Luis Guzman
Leguizamo is the clear winner here...Guzman's character was rather boring and too much like many of his other roles...Leguizamos character was funny and likeable....wereas you hate Guzmans character right off the bat...plus i about died laughing during the phone sex masturbation scene....that was absolutely priceless
Advantage:Spun
the Chicks:
Mena Suvari and Brittany Murphy Vs. Debra Kara Unger
Brittany Murphy is hot.....Debra Kara Unger looks like a cat mutant fucked a grey alien.....'nuff said....Mena Suvari kinda scared me in it.....i didnt think it was possible for her to look THAT bad.....
advantage:Spun
the bitch:
Jimmy the Fin Vs. Frisbee
Jimmy the fin was loyal to his friends to the end...if a little bit pf a sycophantic wimp (i'd be scared if someone got a tattoo of me on their arm)...Frisbee was a bitch who sold everyone down the river....
Advantage:The Salton Sea
the Director:
Jonas Akerlund Vs. D.J. Caruso
Akerlund's style in this piece was very well done...in-your-face and fast paced, with a lot of intresting imagery and animations....however i loved the detective noir style that Caruso put into his film...excellent interplay of light and shadow in the film....i would have loved to have seen it in black and white (which is what he originally wanted to do) plus for being his first feature film....he made a damn good effort....
Advantage:The Salton Sea
Overall its a dead heat in my mind....but now its your turn....how do you rate it? please feel free to include any important point or observations i may have missed....thanks!
