The Salton Sea vs. Spun

being a huge fan of drug movies....especially ones involving methamphetamines....i love these two films...i even go so far as to quote the Salton Sea in my sig....but all this begs the question...which is the better tweaker film......lets break it down

Main Character

Tom Van Allen/Danny Parker (Val Kilmer) Vs. Ross (Jason Schwartzman)

i found Kilmer's character to be far more intresting and in-depth than Ross...at times Ross annoyed me with his whinning over his ex-girlfriend...but he did hammer out a more-than-accurate portrayal of a guy on a 4 day binge....still Kilmer's methed-out monologues and of-kilter logic made him a very likeable character in the film.

Advantage:The Salton Sea

Story:

i loved the idea of the Salton Sea....meth was the main article of the film but the story was a damn fine detective noir narrative...as far as i can tell spun didnt really have a story...or a plot for that matter...in of itself this also was brilliant because it defined the whole "too much energy but nothing productive to do" ethos of the tweaker...it speeds along making you feel like your the one on the binge and not the characters in the movie, and when everyone crashes....you crash as well

Advantage:Spun

the Dealer

Pooh Bear (Vincent D'nofrio) vs. Cook (Mickey Rourke)

this is a tough one....i enjoyed both roles by both actors...they both made me laugh and both pulled off a pretty accurate portrayal of guys who sit in trailers all day cooking and smelling of cat piss....however...Rourkes character was one dementional and rather stereotypical....perhaps this was intentional (again going back to the whole theme of Spun being a meth binge on film) showing the repetition and and monotony of Cook's life (prossibly contributing to his demise at the end). Pooh Bear on the other hand was we-researched and studied for...Vincent D'Nofrio being the insane method actor that he is...overall i found him more intresting and enjoyable.....
Advantage: the Salton Sea

the Cops

Anthony LaPaglia and Doug Huctinson Vs. Peter Stormare

again....this is another tough one to call...we all hate cops....and in both films we hate them even more because they're all dirty...but the defining thing that seperates the two is the fact that LaPaglia and Hutchisons' character were motivated by money....wereas Stormare and his partners' character (his name escapes me) were not only dirty....but nothing more than tweakers themselves! a cop that takes your drugs is bad enough....but what about one that takes them and does them? hey pig thats my stash! plus i loved them bumping their shit off of their badges...classic...

Advantage:Spun

the Mexican:

John Leguizamo Vs. Luis Guzman

Leguizamo is the clear winner here...Guzman's character was rather boring and too much like many of his other roles...Leguizamos character was funny and likeable....wereas you hate Guzmans character right off the bat...plus i about died laughing during the phone sex masturbation scene....that was absolutely priceless

Advantage:Spun

the Chicks:

Mena Suvari and Brittany Murphy Vs. Debra Kara Unger

Brittany Murphy is hot.....Debra Kara Unger looks like a cat mutant fucked a grey alien.....'nuff said....Mena Suvari kinda scared me in it.....i didnt think it was possible for her to look THAT bad.....

advantage:Spun

the bitch:

Jimmy the Fin Vs. Frisbee

Jimmy the fin was loyal to his friends to the end...if a little bit pf a sycophantic wimp (i'd be scared if someone got a tattoo of me on their arm)...Frisbee was a bitch who sold everyone down the river....

Advantage:The Salton Sea

the Director:

Jonas Akerlund Vs. D.J. Caruso

Akerlund's style in this piece was very well done...in-your-face and fast paced, with a lot of intresting imagery and animations....however i loved the detective noir style that Caruso put into his film...excellent interplay of light and shadow in the film....i would have loved to have seen it in black and white (which is what he originally wanted to do) plus for being his first feature film....he made a damn good effort....

Advantage:The Salton Sea

Overall its a dead heat in my mind....but now its your turn....how do you rate it? please feel free to include any important point or observations i may have missed....thanks!

hmm...tough one...
The Salton Sea is a much better story (seeing as though there actually IS a plot)...however the characters in Spun were more entertaining, with the exception of Vincent D'Onofrio...god, I love him...
"I'm a dog baby! woof!"

I'll break it down like this. I liked both movies, but I liked spun better, and this is why. Both were about meth, however the 'plot' in salton sea was a bit much for me. Spun on the other hand was just about a bunch of tweakers going on a binge. Plus there's nothing better than brittney murphey explaining how the only reason she didn't get crabs was cuz of meth. :)
trippies

I agree with Trippies, while the first time I watched The Salton Sea the plot twists were cool, but now I see them as kind of corny. Not to mention ***Mild Spoiler*** how does he manage from using gack for more than a year to going straight after he finishes his "mission".

Spun wins, hands-down. The Cook was phenomenal, I never knew Mickey had acting talent like that in him. "Ask not what the pussy can do for you, but what can you do for the pussy."<---by far, the best line in the movie.

Also, the thing I liked about Ross was his calm smarts. Just like any tweaker is, he keeps his mouth shut, eyes wide as he's waiting to get hooked up, but then when he gets to enjoy his drug, he lets loose his inner demons(holding a woman/plaything hostage). I'm sorry, but that just struck me as clever. Instead of getting those post-meth hormones and just spanking 'em away, Ross decided to stash a live woman in his apartment. Kudos, Ross!

I laughed my ass off when the Spun cops first snorted their lines and kinda looked at each other, sniffled, looked again, approved, looked again, nodded, and looked again to say "Yeah..." Funny shit.

but.... these are two dif't movies....

with dif't intentions and shit... how can we compare them... one is a comedy.. the other, whilst funny, is most certainly not.

I, too, prefered Spun... but that has more to do with a Jason Schwartsman crush than anything (and yes, i watch his new fox sitcom just to see him) ... but you gotta admit... the dealer with no nose was fucked up!

You guys have got to see vincent d onofrio in Mystic Pizza to see how good an actor he truly is in THIS one. ;) Or in all any movie for that matter. cool!

on a side note - I got to see [no was not stalking *honest*'] d'onofrio walk & talk to his baby in Central Park.. it was quite fascinating! He had this almost Jeff Goldblum like pensive-ness when he spoke to the little baby... he is simply a fascinating person to watch!

If I had to pick between the two of them, I'd probably go with The Salton Sea , even if for just the first ten minutes of the movie. That's actually my favorite part of the entire movie. They capture those tweaker moments oh so well...the ocd side of it (rearranging a sock drawer), that first step out into the sunlight...so forth and so on. Other than that, it's an alright movie. It wasn't fantastic as far as I'm concerned, but a good watch nonetheless.

Spun , however, drove me absolutely nuts. The whole time it reminded me of a meth comedown. I'm surprised I made it through the whole movie without throwing a baseball at the movie. Don't get me wrong, it had it's movie merits...In fact, for those reasons it was probably really good because it put me in the same mood I used to get in if I was coming down and everyone else just did a huge line. It seemed like they may have been poking fun at Reqiuem for a Dream as well when they did the sequences. Recall that everyone had a shit fit over the fact that in Requiem the pupils dilated on heroin...did we note that they constricted in this movie? At any rate, Schwartzmann annoyed me beyond all belief, and I think Brittney Murphy finally found her perfect role. The poop scene, though? I could have done without that. :p

i haven't seen the salton sea yet (it is always out at the video store), but i am meaning to. when i saw spun, it was the first time i'd smoked crystal meth, so it was a verrrrrrry interesting experience.

I haven't seen The Salton Sea, so I can't comment on that.

I thought they never really said what drug they were doing in Requiem for a Dream. I guess it would be heroin though because they calm down when they take it.

Yeah, I always thought she looked like a tweeker, and the poop scene was weird.
