film: The Last Samurai

I loved this too, I totally agree with Jeff and Andy. I generally like tom cruise (especially with a beard, *drool* ;)) and I like virtually any movie set in the past.

I though the action was great and overall it was a well done film. I was disappointed that it did not recieve more critical acclaim and viewers.
 
I didn't hate this movie, but I wasn't overly impressed by it either. It's just one of them "fun" movies. :\ I believe Cruise played all of his own stunts, I read an article back in the day on how he insists he does his own work. (MI)

As said before, the music in this movie is top-notch. Actually, this may be one of my favorite movies to watch on my home surround sound system. Every sword movement, every thrust of the blade, every grunt of the warriors sounded so vivid and clear. Definitely an audio lovers dream!

I would probably give it 2 out of 4 stars.

I agree 100% , the music was truly original and excellent, really conveyed the various themes of most scenes.
 
This film is WONDEFUL.
My boyfriend is VERY into living and learning about the Samurai code..it's something we have talked about a lot and watched a lot of movies about (Ghost Dog is a fave)..so we enjoyed this movie a lot.

I cried at the end, when he is dying and he sees the flowers falling from the trees and it's perfect. :)
 
I enjoyed this much more the first time then the second. During my second viewing, all the cliche's came out for me, but there weren't TOO many of them.

And I also would have HATED a love scene early in this.

I haven't seen it since I began my Iaijustu training, so I can't talk about the authenticity of it's swordwork. My current instructor doesn't like this film's swordwork and says it pale's in comparison to kurosawa flicks.


Call me jaded, but Epic films just don't feel anywhere near as epic as they actually are ever since seeing the spectaculer LOTR trilogy. Braveheart recently didn't do much for me even though I used to LOVE it. LOTR has raised my bar far too high.

Well my pizza tray is deeper than this plot. I hired it out and walked out of the room no less than five times to find something else to do because the story was so damn boring and disjointed. I mean this might as well turned into the teenage ninja turtles at the half way mark and it still would have been more realistic and enternaining. Tom Cruise, still using the same mannerisms as ever, I guess he could sort of fight. :\

1.5 STARS. (And that includes a bonus half star for the beautiful scenery)

Hehe. I guess I walked into that one. Well I left my first walk out until after the ninjas came in.

Sorry but this movie ranks along side Windtalkers as the worst movie I've hired out in the last year.
 
I'm sorry, but the film wasn't the least bit impressive in the first 60-70 minutes (which more than enough for any film) and so I left. Maybe people here thought it was spiritual or something, fine. But I found it all very superficial.
 
The majority of the action happens in the latter portion of the film, as does the payoff of watching a somewhat slow pace early in the film.

The first 60-70 minutes doesn't give you enough to really judge the film...you just judged part of it. That'd be like watching the first half of The Usual Suspects and quitting in the middle because you got sick of flashbacks and slow storytelling. Now I'm not saying this is a film of that level of quality, but surely you should give the film a chance in its entirety first before saying it is complete rubbish.
 
Perhaps. I only missed about 8 of the remaining 74-84 minutes. Anyway. I consider myself a rather tough critic and when I watch a film, I want to be moved. I want to feel different with each passing moment, not indifferent. Sometimes films like this can get away with a lean plot. Master & Commander is one that springs to mind because the battle cannon scenes were spectacular and the acting was solid.

OT. I'm going to stick my neck out here and get flamed for sure, but I hate plots outlines like in The Usual Suspects. I find it mentally insulting these films that supposedly have you guess until the last minute and then just wrap everything up in a neat little package. But that is another story. :)
 
Doesn't it mean anything to you that the events in the Last Samurai really happened? That alone really moved me.

Name one film that moved you with each passing moment.
 
Happiness, Memento, All is quiet on the western front, A clockwork orange, Being John Malcovich, Dr. Strangelove, Pi, Cube, Amadeus, Das Boot, The Pianist, Amelie, Seven Samurai, Citizen Kane, The Life Of Brian, The deer hunter, the matrix, empire strikes back, The warriors, Milo & Otis *blush*
 
I can see a patteren in the movies you like. that sucks that you didn't like last samurai, b/c if you can sit there and really take it in and appreciate it, it is very moving.

I can see your point about wanting to be moved. I feel the same way...but at the same time with mainstream American cinema there is a formula you should walk in expecting...and like I mentioned in my initial review, this film seems to just follow its genre...and I like the genre for the most part.

As for The Usual Suspects...I understand how that can grate on people's nerves, but I also thought the acting was superb and the way the film unfolded to its dramatic conclusion was quite entertaining to me...but like you said, that's another story. :)
 
I think it's a pretty damn good movie, I'm really into the samurai/japan's culture and history, the only problem is cruise, I know it's a good performance and no-one else would have put that effort into it but they guy can't be taken seriously (think of interview with the vampire when he plays a frenchmen, he speaks with a fucking irish accent for most of it), cruise is far to mainstream to be placed in such a movie, I'm guessing that most people don't know alot about the samurai (well enough to actually discuss) and after watching this movie they'll be like "The samuria are ... cool and brave for running at people with guns when they only have swords... oooh"
If you want to see a good samurai film watch 'the 7 samurai'.
