Wow, this movie is so bad, it's a-maz-iing.

I just rented this from Blockbuster, on a sheer whim, because of their current sale (all old movies are a buck to rent, holy crap!) - and wow, I have to say, first off, that this is by all intents and purposes an awful movie. It's almost MST3K bad. And yet, for some reason, I still love it. I think it was meant to be bad, since it's basically a parody anyway. It's got Ron Perlman...Angelica Huston...and a bunch of no name nobodies that don't exist anymore, including an awesome Richard Pryor look-a-like that I seem to remember from a bunch of other middling to bad '80s films.

The special effects are ghastly for 1984 - they look somewhat comparable to the special effects from the old Battlestar Galactica TV show. The sets are actually well made, and at least there's tons of real explosions and believable "car" chases. All the land scenes are actually meticulously done - the space fight scenes are completely ridiculous and unbelievable, though. No budget, probably. It's kind of a spoof of sci-fi movies popular at the time, everything from Dune to Star Wars to Alien gets lambasted at some point.

Oh, and my favorite quote:

Jason: [looking at the robot that Roscoe has built] Why'd you make him black?
Roscoe: [smiling] Because I wanted him to be perfect.

=D

Bottom line: terrible film, but it was meant to be terrible. The humor is actually pretty funny - I mean, you can't help but laugh when the spaceship catches "space herpes". It totally kills Spaceballs in the humor department. I hate that movie. But yeah, The Ice Pirates is a classic and underrated spoof of sci-fi films. The dramatic scenes are bad, but who cares - it's supposed to be a comedy of sorts. All in all, in an era where sci-fi movies were usually pretty damn bad and exorbitantly cheesy, this one doesn't take itself seriously at all - and that's why I like it.

No one's seen this sitting in the discount DVD bins at your local video stores? :D

I saw it in the theater when it came out. I was about 9 and still unimpressed.
