just got through watching this for the first time *properly* and i thought it was brilliant. very very weird, of course, but very brilliant all the same. the score/soundtrack was perfectly suited to the mood of the film (although that boy with the high-pitched voice was just bloody annoying :)), and the set design was amongst the best i've ever seen.

there was not a bad performance amongst the cast either.

it was pretty unusual, and i was struggling to get any sort of 'message' from the film, but in the end i figure it's trying to equate fascism (through albert) with cannibalism? obviously there's the *direct* reference to cannibalism at the end, and i presume that there is a sense of irony because it seems that albert has spent his entire life devouring the people around him, metaphorically if not literally, so to make him do it literally is a final justice.

but i could be wrong; i'd be really interested to see what others think of this film.

It's been so long since I've seen this, but I don't think I've ever sat down to, as you say, seriously watch it.
Will report back once I can find the time and opportunity.

the production of this movie is so lush and 'in your face' (e.g. the changing constumes and colours as we move from one set to another), it's easy to overlook some of the plot points and the vicious satire (of the selfishness of britain during the thatcher years?)

it's a feast for the eyes and the ears. if you've not seen it, highly recommended.

Been many years since I'd seen this, but it always stuck with me as one I'd like to come back and view again - perhaps in a more serious watching. But the initial viewing, wasn't hollywood blockbuster, wasn't chock full'o'shock, was just.....well done. Enough to keep you involved, enough to tease you into guessing what may come, enough to make you want to come back and see it again. I need to find this in my library and rewatch soon. :)
