Saw the movie last night prompted by all the Academy Awards.

Awesome film, certainly gonna buy the DVD so I can learn more about it.

I gave it 5*'s!

Lotsa meaning about money and the Hindu-Muslim conflict in India.

<3'd the <3 story too . . . sooo sweet! :)

It's rated "R" because any boy under 14 will have nightmares . . . There's no real sex or swear words in the film, one scene of tragic, violence where a boy's mother is killed, leaving him an orphan.

I can't for the life of me understand why a movie as prototypical as this is being lauded like some groundbreaking triumph.

Indeed. Bland, predictable, not overly exciting or original, not all that well acted, shallow story line, nothing new brought to the table, terrible premise and forgetable lines. It was OK just nothing more, there was nothing different or unusually interesting about it. It barely even drew me in, I actually comtemplated leaving very early on as I was pretty bored.

Why it's being nominated (or winning?) all these awards I'll never know. Yet another average Danny Boyle offering.

in my opinion, there has NOT been a movie released that has been quite as beautiful as Slumdog Millionaire.

Beautiful in which way, please explain?

it is one of the most wonderfully uplifting movies i've ever seen.

Again in which way was it uplifting? Uplifting is not a word I could possibly use to describe Slumdog. Genuinely confused.

If you go see one movie this year, go see Slumdog Millionaire. Listen to what some bluelighters are saying about this 4 time (no that's no fucking typo) Golden Globe winner:

I cannot overstate how much I *implore* each and every one of you to go see it.

It's awesome. Highly recommend it.

this movie is very much like masturbating.

Some people cry and masturbate

This movie was outstanding.....I was hooked.

I'm a jaded bastard who struggles to relate to romantic love.

Do either of you two geniuses happen to be fluent in English? Understand?

Ummm... No, thanks.

So what are you waiting for? Go see the damn movie already. Shit.

it's actually really nice. the directing is spotless imo. boyle has woven a very rich environment in which a quaint tale can be told. whilst the love story isn't exactly my cup of tea, i can't fault it at all. 4/5

whichever retard who called it "love actually in india" somewhere here on bluelight is way off the mark. it is NOTHING like that and thanks to that idiotic remark my expectations and approach had to adjust during the film.

I liked this a lot, it was easy to get sucked in an it definitely delivered.

Timing was right with people feeling the way they do with everything kinda sucking right now and dammit, I wanted to feel good. One thing I didn't like which isn't about the film but the hype, I wish I had seen it a few months ago before the theater was packed with duschy pretentionites.

It was a very safe film. People need to stop making it out to be something it's not. It's not a Hollywood masterpeice.

Goddamnit!

It's amazing to me how many people seem to go out of their way to criticize art that is simply BEAUTIFUL.

Was The Mona Lisa not "simple?"

IMO, some of the best pieces of art, in MANY different genres, are beautiful and top-notch, not despite, but rather BECAUSE of their simplicity.

Don't forget about those SAG awards it just won last night.

NEXT UP: The Academy!

apparently the hallmark channel (india branch) got funding to remake City of God. one for those who enjoy their multicultural microwavable pizza with a cheese stuffed crust.

Stop coming across as a pretentious prat!

The film was dull as dish water but I'm guessing all you people praising it only watch Hollywood films, buy into hype and beleive whatever the critics say. Just because it's won so many awards doesn't mean it's good.

If you'll scroll back several posts, you'll see that I was raving about this masterpiece WAY before it had won a single award.

And as much as I personally dislike it when SOME people automatically equate WINNING AWARDS with GREATNESS, I personally dislike it even more when SOME people go out of their way to be non-conformists and make assumptions about why certain people just happened to appreciate a beautiful piece of art, just because it was SO AMAZING, it became mainstream.

Care to elaborate about why you felt it was "dumb as dishwater?"

Could it possibly be BECAUSE it's getting so much acclaim?

While we're ASSUMING, I'll ASSUME that you got a piercing and/or a tattoo before your 21st birthday, just to show everyone just how much of a cool non-conformist you are!

The stupid jerk who writes movie reviews in the Weekly fish-wrapper-arts-rag didn't include this movie in his best of the year. When he reviewed this movie, he gave it only two or three stars . . . proves what I thought of him all along! His name is james digiovanna. In one of his columns he called me a moron for "denying" the holocaust.

No the film was ALWAYS mainstream. It was never an underground classic or little known film that due to being great became loved by the masses.

Care to elaborate about why you felt it was "dumb as dishwater?"

I said it was "dull as dishwater" not "dumb" and the reason was because it was such an obvious, done a million times before story that wasn't overly well developed or well written. The characters weren't all that deep or engaging. There was absolutely nothing stand out, unique or different about this film and there doesn't always have to be for something to be considered good but when the term "masterpeice" is being banded about by everyone then there should be something a little bit special about it. Sadly there's not, yet another dissapointing Danny Boyle offering.

Could it possibly be BECAUSE it's getting so much acclaim?

Nothing to do with it at all. A good film is a good film but everyone has just bought into the hype with this. It's an OK watchable film (despte the terrible premise) that plots along nicely, very obvious and safe and predictable but it's not a work of art, a masterpeice or genius on any level.

I want someone to tell me what makes this film a masterpeice?

^^^ Its a reality film too . . . shows U what it's like for a Billion ppl in India . . . how they live and contend with Muslims vs Hindus (etc) . . . It took place in Mumbi (fka) Bombay where there recently was (co-incidently) a muslim/Hindu/Jew massacar.

There was a tiny part in it showing the muslim vs hindu thing. The slums are probably much worse than Slumdog made it out to be. Also thanks for the history lesson but I'm well aware of Mumbais former name and not sure why you insist on calling it a muslim/hindu/jew massacre. It was a massacre, lots of different people died not just limited to those religions lets just call it a massacre.

So what was your point anyway?

Anyone who's seen a wide range of Hollyood and world cinema releases this year wouldn't be likely to include Slumdog in a best of the year list because it's far from being the best of anything. Also if you deny the holocaust you must be a moron.

"Denying" was put in quotation marks, though what she may have done may have been just as offensive.

I know the above comment wasn't aimed at me but for the record I said the film sounded like shit before it won any awards (see post#2) or was even nominated.

The concept is crap. The chapter-like way that he explains how he came to know the answers is contrived and unrealistic. It is convenient for the script that there is an entertaining little story for each piece of information. I'm amazed at how many people aren't turned off by the linear (don't be pedantic and pick on this word - i couldn't think of a better one) manner in which the story is constructed.

It may be a moving love story. It may make you laugh or cry.

But it's not a masterpiece. It's not great art.

TheSpade is right as far as I'm concerned.
