Wow, I really loved this movie. (Only caught it last night at 3 am on cable!) So many people in the past were telling me they had found it slow, boring, dull, etc. but it was completely the opposite for me. It was sensual, dirty, exciting, ephemeral . From his grisly birth at that digusting fish market up till his evisceration and destruction at the very end , I was hooked.
My only gripe was that I felt character development was a bit lacking. It was a bit difficult to feel any real sympathy for Baptiste, his victims, and even Dustin Hoffmans character, as they seemed so one dimensional, and lacked the depth that would have brought about some real empathy. Despite that, I still enjoyed myself immensely, and would definitely watch this again.
PS. I could almost smell the bodily stench of 18th century Paris...matted hair, dirty fingernails...kudos to the art department for being SO thorough and realistic! hahaha
PPS. I will get the book soon.
