i thought this movie was half decent , better than most of the crap coming out and the ending was just .... not expected. i reckon 3/5

I liked it - I like it a lot. It was very sensual, in a strange way.

^ I agree on both accounts :)

I can also relate to this film personally, since I have a very sensitive nose and I remember people by their scents first...

4/5

i strongly encourage anybody (i.e you, fengtau :) ) who enjoyed the movie but has not read the book to read the book. it is a significantly more atmospheric and moving experience.

I liked it. Of course I did not have the book to compare with but I like how the way how the director zooms in each time he smells something.

Wow, I really loved this movie. (Only caught it last night at 3 am on cable!) So many people in the past were telling me they had found it slow, boring, dull, etc. but it was completely the opposite for me. It was sensual, dirty, exciting, ephemeral . From his grisly birth at that digusting fish market up till his evisceration and destruction at the very end , I was hooked.

My only gripe was that I felt character development was a bit lacking. It was a bit difficult to feel any real sympathy for Baptiste, his victims, and even Dustin Hoffmans character, as they seemed so one dimensional, and lacked the depth that would have brought about some real empathy. Despite that, I still enjoyed myself immensely, and would definitely watch this again.

PS. I could almost smell the bodily stench of 18th century Paris...matted hair, dirty fingernails...kudos to the art department for being SO thorough and realistic! hahaha

PPS. I will get the book soon.

if you enjoyed the movie, the book will blow you away.

I'll take your advice.

I like the movie, its out of the ordinary. And then there was that PLUR scene wich was amazing hehe :)

I really enjoyed this movie and I saw it because of this thread. So thanks.

Only thing is I thought the ending was a bit rushed and Dustin Hoffman's performance was a bit inconsistent (especially his accent when he first appeared).

I'm going to check out the book now.
