film: monster

i really liked this.
i saw the court tv special on the real story before this and tought that the story telling of the movie was done well on the line between truth and good lore/storytelling.

and both of the girls were brilliant in the majority of the film.

Monster puts the audience in a difficult position: do you sympathize with this troubled soul or do you see her for the distorted murderer she really is? The strangest thing about this film is that the protagonist is also the antagonist. While the movie is an actual depiction of Aileen Wuornos' life and crimes, my main gripe is that this movie goes way too easy on her and fails to show her as the 'monster' that you might expect to see. Director Patty Jenkins desperately tries to paint the a picture of Wuornos' life that almost tries to justify the logic behind Wuornos' indefensible behavior. It seems like she wants you to walk away saying, "I see why she did all that." If her only murder was the one she committed to save her own life, we could indeed walk away saying that. Unfortunately, this is where her murder spree begins. There were really only two moments in this film that truly evoked undeniable negative emotion from the audience toward Wuornos (her first encounter with Selby and her final murder). To me, that is simply going too soft on a woman who killed many men regardless of her motivation.

i finally saw this movie the other night, and i had to bump this thread.

i loved this film. at the end of the movie, i completely sympathized with aileen... she had such a difficult life and did what she had to do to survive. if she didn't shoot the first guy, she would have been killed. she had nothing, no one. i was pissed that selby was involved in the situation to the extent that she was (after all, she knew about what was going on after a while and encouraged the continuation of it) and aileen was the one that paid the whole price.

charlize theron did a phenomenal job- so fuckin' convincing. this was a great movie... 4 stars.

im watching it now in the hotel room. im sooo glad i didnt have to pay to see it. this is almost as lame as boogie nights.

WOW! I've never heard anyone call boogie nights lame...

monster was OK, I was kind of forced to watch it, my girlfriend kept telling me how much she liked it and that I had to see it blaH bLah BlAh. I watched it and we really have different tastes in movies, hell she hates watching them, but I liked it alright.

I disagree.

In my opinion, the movie's greatest STRENGTH (other than Theron's remarkable performance) was that it made me think:

"Holy shit; if I had the misfortune of stepping into her shoes, it is quite possible that I, too, could have been driven to commit multiple murders!"
