Just saw this on DVD. Beautiful direction, stunning cinematography and set design but the entire thing seemed flimsy at best. (yes I've read the novel which was quite mediocre , not something that moved me in anyway) Movie was the same .... lots of eye candy but no real meat and so thus I was left strangely unsatisfied. Ultimately, the geisha aspire to be transparent, transient beings, useful only for pouring tea for their clients or laughing at their awkward jokes. They call themselves artists, but this seems as arbitrary a line as the distinction between “dancer” and “stripper.” Being Asian I understand how the novelty of this book/movie would seem very interesting and appealing to other people, but for me, bleah.

PS.I did love seeing how the costumes turned out tho ...If you've read the novel there are a few pages devoted to the proper geisha attire, and the layers of kimono. Like I said, very good production values deserving of an award .

I got ordered this movie off of digi cable when I was so ripped, I thought it was going to be a Jet-Li style kung fu movie (my digi cable company offers abstracts on the films with about as much detail as neolithic artwork). It was just about the exact opposite, but was still a cool movie. I got a nice little dose of anthropology. At times I felt it was trying way too hard, and came across as corny, but overall it was really good. The more objective cinematic qualities were excellent, and all the characters were very realistic and well developed. I loved a lot of the scenery and other imagery.

damn, mcwigga still has my "special" copy of this film. It's special because the english subtitles are completely wrong. They're from some war or cop movie. It's gonna be a riot watching it completely while drunk.

I really wanted to like this film because I'd LOVED the book... but unfortunately I found it quite tedious in parts... visually stunning, but overwinded and drawn out. My butt hurt sitting on the seat and I noticed it, which doesn't happen with movies that completely absorb me.

that said, it *is* a visually stunning film, and perhaps I'd give it another watch on DVD in the comfort of my couch to truly appreciate it.

I really enjoyed this movie. The story just got me and I couldn't wait to see the end.

One thing that bothered me (as it does on many movies) is the characters speak English but with Japanese accents. why bother? just make it in Japanese with subtitles....

also, I was a little surprised to learn at the end that the book was written by what seemed like a white guy..?

Was this movie any good for a guy ? I don't need all out action and I can appreciate a romance as long as it's light. This just seems to me that while it may be a killer movie, it would be fuckin lame for a guy...

I absolutely love movies of this style or any asian movies really.

I have this 4 stars, I would have given 5 stars if I could.

I think zhang zi yi is one of the prettiest women on earth, she is absolutely stunning.
