@Michael: care to explain the alt. ending?
@atlas (try saying that aloud): what-the-hell were you doing watching Mortal Combat - again?

This is actually an amusing story. When I was starting the... 6th grade, i think, one of our teachers insisted that we write a letter to ourselves that we would open at the end of 8th grade, so see how we'd changed.

we were supposed to name our favorite film, but I balked, being the smaller version of the agonizingly self-aware person who speaks to you today. I wrote something to the effect of:

"I know I'm not going to like it in the future, and I'll probably be really embarrassed, but right this very moment, my favorite film (I probably used the word film), is Mortal Kombat."

The fact that I once liked it before all other films is a kind of memento moria for my personal tastes, and therefore, watching at least a little of it whenever I see it on television on the weekends is de rigur. =D

NSFW:
randy quaid pilots his barnstormer into the alien ship, because he can't get the bomb released, screaming yee-haw or something ridiculous like that.

"Welcome to Earth!"

I loved it, love it still. I've seen it like 20 times.

Yeah, I know it isn't "Citizen Kane." But it gets me going on a complete reptile brain level.

Snide comments about how all us Americans think we're John Wayne will be tolerated.=D

I never miss that old movie, "Fantastic Voyage" with Stephen Boyd, for precisely that reason. It was my favorite...when I was 8.
