Herzog is a brilliant, brilliant man (by the wway, I THink Stroszek is his best work) ... however, I couldn't give a shit less about this film. I give it a C- or roughly 70%. More detailed review when I'm less smacked up,,

I was reading an article somewhere and they were explaining the audio tape. This recording sort of "word for word" (for lack of a better term) goes with it. If anyone want to see it I can try to find it. I really wish I hadn't listened to that. Call it morbid curiosity but now I'm pissed at myself. I'm also sort of disgusted with some of the things I read on IMDB. Yea the guy was a bit of a flake but god damn have some fucking respect. I'm not sure why that documentary got to me so much but it did. I'm thinking it had something to do with how obvious it was that this guy had major issues. The scene where he starts freaking out about the lack of rain and is cursing god is a perfect example. It kind of makes me wonder how much different things would have turned out for him had there been a slight tweak in the events that lead up to his death.

apparently you have a soft spot for melodramatic closet cases:)

why precisely should treadwell be respected in your opinion? because he was chemically imbalanced? if so, i hope you have a wealth of respect for mariah, jack0, anna nichole etc etc.... is it because he died? everybody dies, this toss was fortunate enough to die doing something that (he'd have us believe) that he loved: playing house with dangerous animals.

iunno im just not feelin this movie but i think i've made that obvious :)

LOL yea i was ranting a little bit there huh. I do have softspot for the chemically unbalanced, it's true. I wrote my post right after I heard that clip, and apparently it bothered me more than I was letting on. I guess it was just that he died doing something he TRULY thought was right and loved (like you said as he'd have us believe). There really is something about watching a person who is really not all there live out life that strikes a chord in me. So perhaps respect wasn't necessarily the right word.

so after playing the audio clip for my bf last night and listening to it again i've decided that i think it is definitely fake:

*the bear sounds like it is right up against the microphone, yet treadwell seems a lot further away...i just realized this after the second listen

*i really doubt that the lady who has the only copy of the tape and didn't even listen to it would let it leak

*even if the recording was word-for-word of what an article said, that doesn't mean anything....the ppl who faked the recording (assuming that it is fake) probably read the article (or some similar article) and copied right from it

either way, though, it is disturbing and i honestly had a hard time listening again the whole way through the second time

This documentary is fantastic. Sure, Herzog editorializes a few times, but he left such a wide range of opinions in the film, from "Treadwell deserved it" to "Treadwell is a bear savior" that you can pick just about any point of view. In my mind, the film is about a lot more than an idiot surfer or misguided naturalist. 5/5

mc, thank you. the bear in my avatar is a kind bear - if only it had been he that grizzly man befriended. :| =D

I loved it, awsome footage of the bears in their natural environment and an intense character study of his mental and eventually physical demise.

Some parts are fkn funny like when the fox takes his hat, and the ranting on about rain while he is in his tent and towards the end when he goes off his rocker screaming about the park rangers or whatever, classic =D

i watched part of it and found the guy to be really annoying. i knew you didn't get to actually see him get attacked, but for some reason i thought you could hear it in the movie. call me a bad person, but i found it anti-climactic.
