I can't believe that there hasn't been a thread on this before now!.

Personally, I didn't really like this film much on first viewing. And altho the first 30 mins or so really hooked me in and I fell for the characters, everything seemed to go downhill after that for me and I found it boring and depressing. But after viewing it several more times it gradually become one of my favourite top 10 films. Mostly because I feel I'm a bit of an Enid and I too went through all those silly phases when I was that age.

DVD synopsis

Deliciously dry and quirky, Ghost World, based on the cult comic book, is like no other teen comedy you've seen before!. Original and terrifically funny, Ghost World is a raw-edged comedy that follows Enid (Thora Birch-American Beauty)and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson-The Horse Whisperer), two teenage girls who haven't always been too cool to bother with the losers in their High School. Embarrassing the local 'freaks' and laughing at all around, their friendship is founded on the mutual conviction that pretty much everything sucks!

But when a practical joke on a malcontent named Seymour (Steve Buscemi-Reservoir Dogs), backfires, their lives start to turn upside down and Enid and Rebecca struggle to maintain their friendship. Ultra-cool, ultra-funny whilst still being warm and touching, this is a film that's refreshingly different and a total blast.

This film also features one of my most favourite opening sequences ever. The panning camera swoops across a neibourhood of weirdos and freaks as Enid dances along to a Bollywood film in her graduation gown. There's something so uplifting about this sequence for me.

Illeana Douglas also gives a great performance as the overexcited feminist art teacher, Roberta Allsworth. I feel she's a very underrated actress who never fails to impress me with her extrmely animated acting qualities.

I love this movie, it's definitely one of my top 10 too.

malora is my favorite ;) her hand gestures are too funny.

This was one of those films that I absolutely LOVEEEDD when in was in high school. Now, I still like it but I don't think I identify with the characters as much. I think it's a great "coming of age" film and should be seen as such.

Deffinately.

I'm sure we've all wanted to run away from ourselves at one point or another and refuse to grow up and face the real world. I think I'm still stuck somewhere in-between :\

my favorite character was doug.
"gimme like 5 of these beef jerkies--im hungry enough to chew the crotch out of a ragdoll."

oh, ghost world. . .i looooved this comic book, and the movie did it justice.

daniel clowes is an amazing comic artist/writer but the film adaptation of art school confidential didn't illustrate that as well as ghost world did. i gave it 4 stars.

I watched this movie a few years ago and remember it being one of the worst movies ive ever seen. Both of the girls in it deserve to be stabbed to death.

I will never understand why Ray Carney busts a glorious nut at every mention of this movie. It's a fine film, but surely not one for the fucking ages.

A quaint, dare I say, cute, movie with a nice soundtrack. I think it's pretty boring though, and definitely lacking any sufficient depth to merit repeat viewings.

I really like Terry Zwigoff's Crumb, and highly recommend it.
