I love Cronenberg. Similar to a history of violence but I thought the characters were even better. Great movie either way. Bad ass acting, incredible directing, and god damn some realistic violence.

man the only thing i remember about history of violence was the king capping brigadier general and the impulsive stair sex because the rest was too boring but i still feel like eastern promises shows promise

It was alright, but nothing to rush out and see. I am not really a huge Cronenberg fan, but it did its job.

^Not incredibly, but the one part that was violent was pretty graphic, but not too bad considering current trends in movie violence.

then I'm not watching it. heh jk. I just fucking can't stand Scorcese violence. his scenes are violent in an edgy manner that is only useful for those who need to experience fear artificially.

One of best films to come out this year, imho. But that's not saying much as there hasn't been any quality releases. Very rare these days to get a tight drama, with a hint of originality. It definitely grabs you from the start and pulls you in.
Strong performances throughout.

I don't know how jaded I really am... but this movie fucking sucked. It portrayed the most laughable, ridiculous image of Russians. It plays up to the most idiotic stereotypes. It's like David Cronenberg bending over in Hollywood with a magazine up his ass saying "mmm!!! look it! My movie about the Russian mafia! It's crime - with RUSSIANS! Hardcore man!"

Fucking weak.

i've been meaning to catch this. i really dug history of violence.

Terse, tense, moody drama. You really get a sense of impending violence throughout the movie. Mortenson does a great job of portraying the quiet dangerous type, a character where less is definitely more.

Some people might find it boring or formulaic, but I think the concept of the potential for sudden and graphic violence that pays off with some shocking scenes makes for a great thriller. The film really succeeds in portraying characters who are human despite their sociopathic behavior, and playing them against one another to create a film where chaos is always just below the surface. While there is definitely blood and gore, the true thrill in this film is the anticipation, more of a psychological thriller than a shoot-em-up or an action movie.

I can't speak to the stereotypes of Russians, as I don't know anyone in the Russian mafia, but as far as the characters themselves go, they are far from shallow. Every character in the plot is well developed, and their motivations and reactions to one another weave a story that is deeply dramatic and intricate.

5 stars.

the acting was great. as a whole, though, the movie didn't reach the heights i had hoped for it.

Went and saw this with no real expectations, except that it would be violent and interesting, interesting because I've never really experienced anything to do with the Russian mafia depicted in film, so it was to me, a fresh topic.

I really enjoyed it. Can't really complain with a bit of nude Viggo action really ;) not that that was the defining moment of the film ;)

CB :)

I found it stereotype Russians in general. I don\'t know anyone in the Russian mafia either. But it portrayed Russians as these simple, brutalistic people who care mostly about drinking and territory, and "good vs. evil" or something. More of a description of Anglo-saxons than anyone else really.

Good movie, just not enough action for what they make it out to be. History of Violence was much better with Viggo.

like every other mob movie portrays italians (or irish in road to perdition, or english in long good friday, etc. etc.)

i dont think the ethnicity was what made them that way, it was that the majority of characters were sociopathic mobsters.
