Radar returns for a special Dawn of the Dead review! ***spoilers!!!***

Hello, all!!! It is I, your humble movie geek and former Mod Radar, here to give you a very special comeback review of the new Dawn of the Dead. I still check BL on occasion, and felt that this movie really, really deserved a review from someone who knows what's up with the genre. But beware, I'm a horror purist and this ain't gonna be pretty!

On with my review...

***SPOILERS!!!***

Here's the deal: I'm a film buff. Big time. It's my passion, my love, my chosen path in life. Horror flicks especially. That being said, I have a tremendous respect for George A. Romerro (who recieved no royalties from this film). All of Romero's movies, Dawn in particular, are a commentary on modern society and culture. In the '67 Night, the commentary was on racism, and to a degree, feminism. In Day, the commentary was on fascism and rampant military. And in my beloved Dawn, the commentary was on consumerism (and to a much, much lesser degree, Hare Krishnas).

If you're like me, and love George Romero not only for his groundbreaking work in the field of horror cinema but also for his scathing commentary on culture, do NOT go see the remake. It's gone- all of it.

If you're like me, and hate it when characters make completely illogical moves, when the laws of physics do not apply, and when there is massive plot incontinuity, do NOT go see this movie! It's chalk full of all of the above.

If you're NOT like me and absolutely adore digital special effects and CGI and prize them over plot, character development, dialogue, and latex, by all means, SEE THIS MOVIE! It's full of mindless, haphazard, unrealistic gore that will keep you glued to your seat until you go home and smoke more pot.

In short, it's a piece of shit. I'm not going to outline all of the plot holes, logic farts and physics problems here, as my arm hurts a lot and I'm whiny. But I most likely will in a reply to this post, just to cement my position.

its been a while since a movie had me nervious and anxious...i wasnt let down.
i just adore movies where the ending is a 180 from what you expect.

you might want to recall that some people haven't seen this..

spoiler warning, you goof :p

Okay, RadarLove had some very good points. Yes, I really liked this movie. However as a 'remake' it did not do the original any symbolic justice. The underlying theme of human greed, and in turn, consumerism corrupting and leading to the character's eventual demise was completely lost. It really was not in the film at all...and, really, that's why I liked the original so much....
But, for a 'Hollywood', money making, blood-and-guts film, it isn't bad. It kept me entertained, even though there wasn't a hell of alot of thought behind it (as many horror movies these days are).
I liked the slower moving zombies better than the faster '28 days later' type zombies...

RadarLove :

I went to see this last night and I can see your point about it not keeping to the meaning behind the original. However, I thought the effects were awesome (I'm not in the geeky camp where the worse they look, the better they are. I think thats a bit ghey... people like that should move on!), I like the zombies being fast, although I liked the old slow ones too.

The main thing that got me about this movie though, was the pace. It just could not have been paced any better than that imho.

So, my question is:

If they hadn't called it Dawn of the Dead, would you have thought it was a good movie?

i love horror movies, especially ones with zombies trying to kill every human in sight.

i fucking loved this movie. it was suspenceful, gorey, bloody. it was much better than 28 Days Later.

my advice- hang around to watch the credits. the ending revealed during the credits is much better than the regular ending.

I finally saw it lastnight and I have to say it was pretty good. Not as good as the origonal but none the less it was very entertaining. I liked the way they brought the humourous parts across from the origonal too.

Saw an advanced screeding last weekend. I'm a big fan of the original George A. Romero classic and this remake doesn't let it down. The film has a perfect advertisment for not using a chain-saw on a moving vechicle.=D The zombies wern't slow and dimwitted like in the original they were more like in 28 days later. Definitly recommended for horror fans.

this was the best horror movie I have seen in years.

Easily.

Loved it and came out of the cinema totally and utterly satisfied. Brilliant.

Just finished watching this movie and I loved it.

After reading radarlove's post I am definately going to see the originals, which I have never seen.

The scene with the chainsaw in the van made me visibly cringe, tasty stuff :)

The ending was awesome, although there was that small part of me that wished that it had ended a bit happier. But of course the end was designed to promote that emotional response :)

I loved the way the movie didn't fuck around. About 4 minutes into it you had zombies. 10 minutes into it, apocalyptic scenes.

I actually quite enjoyed this film. It kept me very entertained and I liked the characters; I'm also a HUGE Sarah Polley fan (she played the nurse/female lead). I haven't seen the original so I can't compare to that.

Not a masterpeice, but highly enjoyable. I'll see it again for sure.
