Tim Burton will fuck this up with his own bizarre style. This doesn't need to be remade with his twisted, shitty filmmaking.

the fact that it was written by the same guy who wrote " charlies angels" was enough to put you off right there

I enjoyed watching Burton's vision of Charlie, Wonka and Co. It entertained throughout and creatively speaking Burton once again comes through with his bizarre, yet magical touch.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD

I'm gonna have to disagree with some here though and say the original still wins...if only because I wasn't able to listen to the bliss that is "The Candy Man" "I've Got a Golden Ticket" and "Pure Imagination". I can never detach Wonka and Co. from these songs, so it's unusual for me to see the story told without them. Of course, I wasn't expecting the songs, but the new songs, while funny, didn't capture me the way the original songs did.

Oompa Loompas...fuckin' aces. Great work all around, and that's a big compliment considering it's tough to match up to the old Ooompa Loompas.

The puppet scene...classic. The song played is easily the most catchy of all in the new movie...and the most annoying too.

Good catch on the Fear and Loathing reference too! The initial licking part was funny enough, but the tongue flick almost had me falling out of my chair. No doubt some people were confused by my reaction.

The flashbacks seemed out of place, but still worked overall...and reconnecting back to the present with Willy daydreaming was a nice touch.

Excellent casting all-around, though did Burton REALLY need Helena Bonham Carter in another one of his movies? ;) Her fake teeth bugged me a little. Grandpa Joe's dance was great.

A visual delight indeed.

For some reason, I thought it was rated R. Perhaps I hoped it would be. I was entertained not blown away.
I did not like the one Oompa Loompa times one hundred. Are there not a bunch of little people to hire for those roles? I didn't dig the songs (except for the puppet ditty).

The songs were definetly my least favorite aspect of the movie. They seemed really out of place.

overall I thought the setting was trippy - but more in a goofy way and far from a visual asthetic way.

Depp held the movie together and made it somewhat worthwhile, but he did not do a stellar job. he seemed too quirky and possesed by a demon with intense tourettes.

the ending was cliche and the "bad Dad" angle was an over-played hyperbole.

"I'm sorry, I was having a flashback."
Hahaha and me and about 2 of my friends around me bust out laughing. Except we are the only ones, the rest of the crowd is kids with their parents.=D

I like it, but as some have said it won't replace the older one in my mind, which is fine by me. It's still a decent movie in it's own right. I liked the songs, and how they varied the musical styles with each. Violet's mom was a nice character, and I liked the fact that Charlie had a father in the movie. The backstory about the grandpa working on the factory was more integrated as well, which was cool.

*spoiler (perhaps?)*

Bel: I thought the same thing as you re: the fizzy lifting drink, but upon reflection I do think the scene where charlie found the money and went and bought a candy bar could be seen as a child-like response where he wasn't thinking of his family first. He could have taken that note that he found and went and got the family something other than cabbage, but thought of himself and getting the candy bar first. It's sort of a failing, but a more child-like one, instead of directly obeying some order.

I don't remember if the fizzy lifting drink part is in the book though...if it was then it does seem like a fairly glaring part to leave out.

damn ... readin this makes me want to see the movie even more! *uh* stupid fucking crowds need to go away so i can see it! cant stand goin to movies to have 15 yr olds yelling and throwing shit ...

i will wait i guess :)

I enjoyed everything about this movie except the oompa loompas. They almost ruined it entirely for me. I understand they were trying to appeal to kids but it didn't play into the darkness of the rest of the film. :(

Besides that, I loooved Depp's performance along with just about every other character.. Violet and Varuka were awesome. I also really appreciated the filter Burton chose for this one.

Did anyone see the preview for Burton's next film? Another Nightmare Before Christmas-esque film!? it doesn't get any better. :D

That scene wasn't in the book (so I hear), but its addition to the movie was a bonus, IMO.

overall, i would say that this film is an improvement over burton's latest works, but it is nearly impossible (for me) to compare this to the gene wilder version, since it was so different.

the fact that you can't really compare this to the original cos it's so different is great imo.

I just saw this last night. I think Johnny Depp sucked in it. He definitely wasn't the right person for the role. I think Jim Carry would have been a lot more suitable. It seemed like Depp was trying to do a lot of Carry-type faces and laughs, wasn't very good at it.

I haven't seen the first one but this was HORRIBLE.

And yes, when Depp was in the jungle he definately seemed to be playing the Raol Duke character from F&Loathing for a brief second.

I was really looking forward to this, I thought Burton would have made a masterpiece out of it...

But I saw it tonight, and hated just about every minute of it. Depp was boring and predictable as Wonka [insert creepy giggle and smile here] and I couldn't have cared less about the characters, there was no interesting character development whatsoever.

And don't even get me started on the Oompa Loompas - what a disgrace. I literally dreaded each song they brought on, knowing it would be pathetically dressed with boring pop-culture cliches and giant sunglasses (of course!)

Such a disappointment :(

This movie comes ouit in Australia soon cant wait but i just hope these negative reports arent true as i have been craving this movie for ages :(
