I enjoyed it. It was pretty close to my experience with slinging. More than, say, Spun.
Mind you, I had a strict rule about only slinging to middle class types. The only unrealistic aspect of "50 Pills" was that no one ever tried to haggle with the guy or ask about price breaks.

The whole big time dealer finding out about him serving and kidnapping him after just half a day was kind of unrealistic too. The jokes were also very cliche, and not funny.

I enjoyed it. Seemed like a pretty accurate portrayal of Lucas (as far as I can tell from the little reading and what I've heard of the boroughs back in the day).

Seems pretty accurate as to how things are run, even to this day.

I hear right now Jersey has some bags stamped with 'Blue Magic' making rounds.....paying homage to the elders.

I caught it the other day and it's not half bad. Frank Lucas comes off as the quietest, smartest, and most dangerous gangster of all time. The acting's all pretty good, although I kept wondering A) doesn't Rza's Wu-Tang tattoo look out of place in a picture about Harlem in the 1970s? And B) Is anyone buying Russel Crowe being Jewish?

It also runs maybe 20 minutes longer than it needs to. I'd give it a 4/5.

I gave it 3 stars, a good flick overall but it lost a star because of Russell Crowe- his acting was fine I just don't like the man.

or making a profit on pop culture buzz... thats one of the cheesiest things i've heard in while :D

^^ Someone was saying the other day that when they played season three of the wire there was dope called 'stringer bell' being sold in Baltimore 8) =D

I liked it. Could've had more focus, as someone else said, on Frank Lucas's rise to power.

I can't decide if that's neat or tacky

LOL

I haven't seen this yet, but is it only about Frank Lucas, or is any of it about Nicky Barnes as well?

I saw the Gangland episode on the History Channel about them, well half of it, I was exhausted. The parts I did see where really interesting though and it seems like it would only be telling half of the tale of the NYC H scene if they didn't mention Barnes.

^see the movie :) but it's mostly about Lucas. Barnes is in there but not very fleshed out.

film: American Gangster

Just saw it last nite and although it was a bit lengthy, i enjoyed it a great deal and found it to be incredibly interesting and accurate.

Only thing i hated was Russel Crowe, made me hate him (and he was supposed to be the good guy) i was rooting for Frank the whole time, which is why it's not getting as good of reviews as it should... at least in my opinion

Well of course. :) There is some some sick dope-slinging in this movie, isn't there? Kind of like The Wire ... you can kind of root for the bad guys but also realize that they're just that ... not very nice people ... but still ... yeah ...

^ there's just no professionalism anymore ... 8)

I know a couple of old guys who were around in the days of frank lucas, nicky barnes &co. They're a bunch of nostalgic motherfuckers too ...

i went to cop the other day and there was this crackhead passed out in the hallway.... and she had her skirt pulled up over her head. And she had the cutest little bush.

So I jerked off! Came on her, copped and left.

(bonus points if you know what that comes from)

haha damn, thats a great story (doesn't relate to the thread at all, but still a great story!) i have a pretty good visual image of that girl in my head ;)

Saw it for the first time last night. One of the best gangster movies of our generation. I think it belongs on the same shelf as Casino.

ight, I watchd this movie about 3 times, every time i was on dope and i dont remember a thing from it. But usually i do remember. which is tellin me that it musta not been that good.

kinda un related....Im lol'in tho at how this movie is already makin normal-ass people think they are insiders of the dope trade becuz they can know to say "o yea but he snitched and nicky barnes was really the one runnin that shit" and bla bla bla ....

i didnt see it in theaters, but rented it a few weeks ago. i didn't have any expectations because i had just seen Michael Clayton (imo, a terrible movie) and this one was really good. 4/5.
