This movie has just opened in Perth to mixed revues from all quarters. There are about 35 minutes of real sex involved, the actors are actually having sex. This is bringing about a debate on whether this is art or porn. According to the revue i am reading the sex scenes leave nothing to the imagination.

So why is this movie different to a standard porno, i think i may have to see it before developing an opinion but has anyone sles seen this movie as yet.

what i've heard about it is that the sex is a mere device to make the display of the relationship more 'real', and it centres more on this real depiction of the sex than it does on anything gratuitous.

Hmmm i can't judge as i have not seen but.......

Too me it sounds like sexploitation, sex sells....

As for the movie using sex too "display the movie as being more real" sounds a little rich too me.....i could be wrong, but many good movies in the past have shown the turmoil/happiness of relationships without showing actual sex scenes.....using real scenes, in my opinion, is just sensationalising the depicted scene, inturn shocking the viewer and creating controversy.....

But hell i'm all for it!!

the only movie i have seen that may compare to the sex scene in 9 songs is the opening scenes of Betty Blue, they were rather explicit in as much as it was difficult to believe there was not actual penetration occuring.

I've seen the scenes online already. ;)

The line between porn and art has been impossible to define for a long time. I don't think this movie will raise any new questions, nor will it break any significant new ground due to its limited release. That said, I wish I could see it. ;)

I've always wanted to see full fledged sexuality within a movie but done with the upmost artistic ability in terms of acting, directing, etc.. within a movie that has solid character development, captures emotion beautifully, and has a solid story line with actors worthy of broadway.

Though, i do think having sex with someone is alot to ask of an actor/actress that isn't a porn star to some degree. So most of the time you're going to get the porn star who can't act or the actor who won't fuck.

It is a shame though that the attempts of doing this have normally resulted at using merely the sex as a means to stir controversy and bring attention to itself out of pure shock rather than artistic realism.

I remember sitting back watching Baise Moi (Rape Me) a couple of years ago.. and while it was a decent attempt.. it was just a shock film, nothing more and nothing less..and there wasn't much to it other than sex, drugs, violence and half assed acting.

Just saw the movie late last week

Obviously the relationship was emphasised through the sexual side of the couple and left little to the stroy line. Though if you really wanted to you could dig deeper into the psychological side of the relationship.

In the movie they didn't really go too indepth with the male character. They showed more the personality of the girl and i believe through her character and personality it showed the reason for why the relationship ended.
For those who have seen it it's obvious to say they ended it because she was leaving, but you could see signs that she didn't want anything long term. The longer the relationship went for the more she was feeling enclosed and the more she was getting aggitated with him. He obviously saw the signs too, was also jealous but wanted to hold onto the relationship.

Anyway, i could keep going but i won't.
I just related to the female character so much that i didn't see the sex scenes as porn but merely saw it as the coin tossed on the whole aspect of the dating game. The parts where more box office movies wouldnt dare to tread.

I believe it blurs the line between porn and art. But it is tasteful in the way it shows the ups and downs of a relationship, and the coming of age so to say of the couple until the end. With cuts of music fit inbetween to get the rating away from X :p
